You could be great, you know. It's all here in your head.
Hogwarts Legacy
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment and Avalanche Software’s much anticipated Hogwarts Legacy finally arrives in less than a month. Despite the occasional hiccup caused by controversial Harry Potter creator J.K. Rowling, Hogwarts Legacy has remained at the top of Steam’s most wanted list for months — even beating out Bethesda Softworks upcoming title Starfield for the number one spot. With the release of this open-world RPG so close, I thought we could sit down and cover the four Hogwarts Houses, and what you can expect from each of them. After all, you will have a big decision to make when you arrive in the great hall to be sorted.
Gryffindor
Gryffindor’s Motto: Forti Animo Estote — which translates to “Be of Good Courage” or “Stay Strong of Heart” (Latin can be hard).
Gryffindor is perhaps the house which people will be the most familiar — due to the Harry Potter books and films. The house was founded by Godric Gryffindor, and is represented by the scarlet and gold emblem of a lion; this animal is an appropriate mascot for Gryffindor house given that the traits commonly associated with them are: bravery, daring, nerve, and chivalry.
Hidden dormitories exist for each of the four houses, only a member of said house is permitted into their corresponding dormitory. So if you are a Gryffindor, don’t expect to be allowed entry into the Ravenclaw common room. Gryffindor students can find their lodgings located on the seventh floor, behind the portrait of the Fat Lady. Much like in the books and films, the Gryffindor common room has a cosy almost Victorian design to it, but with a magical twist.
In Hogwarts Legacy, there will be several companion characters for you to meet and befriend. The Gryffindor companion is Natsai Onai, daughter of the school's Divination teacher. I should take a moment to mention that just because you are in one house, does not mean you can't befriend people from another.
Hufflepuff
Ah Hufflepuff, this one has often been called the “miscellaneous” house out of the four. But there is so much more to them than that. Founded by Helga Hufflepuff, they are represented by the emblematic badger of yellow and black. Hard work, patience, dedication, and loyalty are prized by its members.
Long time fans of the Potterverse, will know that it is only the Hufflepuff common room of which we never get a description of in the books, Hogwarts Legacy will finally allow us within this part of the castle; its entrance is located down the same corridor as the kitchens, and entry to the Hufflepuff Basement dormitories is gained by way of a large unassuming barrel. This common room is said to have many circular doors and curved wooden archways; don’t be surprised if you feel like you are inside a comfy burrow while hanging out here.
Poppy Sweeting will be the Hufflepuff companion players can expect to meet. She is said to have a fascination with magical creatures, I personally cannot wait to interact with all the creatures such as hippogriffs, mooncalves, and thestrals, that have been shown off leading up to the game’s release.
Ravenclaw
Ravenclaw’s Motto: Wit beyond measure is man's greatest treasure.
Valuing knowledge, curiosity, creativity, and wit, Ravenclaw house is perhaps the one that resonates most with me personally. Founded by Rowena Ravenclaw, this house is represented by the bronze and blue emblem of an eagle (yes an eagle, not a raven).
The Ravenclaw dormitories can be accessed via the fifth floor on the western side of the castle, upon climbing a spiral staircase, you will be faced with a door bearing an eagle shaped knocker. Within lies the aerie-like common room of Ravenclaw Tower. You can expect to find smooth stone architecture, as well as an emphasis on books and learning in this place.
Intelligent and with a love for astronomy, Amit Thakkar is a traditional Ravenclaw and will be the house's companion in game. Hopefully, he is ready to get up to mischief because I don’t intend to follow all the rules.
Slytherin
Slytherin house was founded by Salazar Slytherin, who unlike the other founders had a very different philosophy when it came to magical education. It was his belief that magical learning should be kept only within pureblood families. Eventually, this caused a fracture between him and the other founders. Before departing, Salazar was rumoured to have hid a monster in the school, its purpose was to purge those he deemed unworthy to study magic. This has caused an ongoing stigma to be associated with Slytherin house. However, not all students produced by Slytherin turn to the Dark Arts, do they?
Characterised by an emerald green and silver snake, this house values: ambition, leadership, self-preservation, cunning, and resourcefulness.
In order to reach the Slytherin common room, students must make their way down to the dungeons from a doorway off the entrance hall, once in the dungeons Slytherin students can approach what seems to be a bare stretch of stone wall, behind which the Slytherin dormitories are concealed. Players can expect this common room to have a dark and regal feel to it, illuminated by greenish lamps.
Sebastian Sallow is the Slytherin companion in Hogwarts Legacy, and is the companion we know the most about so far. It seems Sebastain, in an attempt to help his ill sister, may have turned to using Dark Magic. Should players aid him in his journey, they might do more harm than good, but then again you could learn a few Unforgivable Curses from this delinquent. So weigh your options.
