Unsure what this hellish FPS is? We’ve got you covered.

Everything You Need to Know About Scathe

There is a fair chance that, as you’ve decided to read this article, you don’t know too much about the upcoming first-person shooter Scathe. Well, luckily for you, I’ve had my eye on the game for a while now and I’m here to tell you everything you need to know about Scathe!

First of all, if you’re a fan of the DOOM or QUAKE franchises, and can’t get enough monster-slaying action, this should be added to your wishlist right now! Scathe is the debut title from developer Damage State and with the release date being so close — 31st of August, 2022 to be exact — it won’t be long until you can unleash hell upon the swarms of demonic forces.

Scathe certainly looks the part, with the maze-like levels all looking dark and menacing, but with enough variety to stave off any repetition. Time will tell just how wide this range will be, however from my time with the demo and the various trailers online, I’m impressed not only with the range of environments, but the number of enemy types (not to mention the amount of them on screen at any one time) and available weapons too!

But how does the game play? Scathe is no ordinary FPS, with a relentless bullet hell style of combat, incredibly over-the-top weapons, and a genuine sense of speed; you’ll need to be constantly on the move to ensure you escape each stage, and quick reflexes are a must. Think about games such as Cuphead, where standing still for too long is a death sentence, but in a 3D environment, and you’ll have the basis for what Scathe is all about.

Focusing on the weapons, the description of the game states “Spew hellfire with the Hot Hatch or slice through endless evil with the Bow Blade.” If that doesn’t hype you up, then I don’t think anything will. However, diving more in-depth, each one of your wide array of guns will have an alternate fire mode, allowing you to change up how you play without even swapping weapons. Not only that, but you’ll also have access to magical abilities, which can be unleashed after gaining enough arcane energy; spells such as freezing enemies, healing yourself, even summoning some help to tackle the forces of evil!

Perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of Scathe is the drop-in and drop-out multiplayer with up to three other players, although be careful: you all share the same pool of lives! This is an interesting concept that could result in frantic gameplay sessions with friends, or a few arguments if someone burns through the team's lives too quickly!

If you’re even the slightest bit curious about Scathe, I’d recommend giving the demo a try on Steam. It gives players a small sample of what to expect before the release of this potential demon-slaying masterpiece!
