What We Know About Saints Row (2022)

A complete reboot after things got a little too crazy with Saints Row IV and Gat Out of Hell, Saints Row (2022) seeks to get back to the roots of the franchise while still giving the inane wackiness the series became more infamous for.

Away from familiar settings such as Stillwater and Steelport, the game is set in the city of Santo Ileso: The Unhurt Saints. Largely inspired by the American Southwest, like Las Vegas and New Mexico, it features a large open desert, a bustling downtown, and a residential area for the rich and powerful. It would be a nice place to be, maybe even live in… if it weren’t for the three gangs that have made sections of the city their turf: the anarchistic Idols, the power-obsessed Los Panteros, and the futuristic PMC Marshall Defense Industries. However, a new gang is about to upheave their control over the city: The Saints.

The Saints are led by the highly-customisable player character simply known as “The Boss.” Once a soldier for MDI, they were promptly fired after disobeying orders and failing an important mission. With their student loan debts looming over their heads, they have no choice but to do the most logical thing: start a street gang, take over the city and make their own criminal empire. However, they aren’t alone. The Boss has friends they can rely on, some of them even being former members of the other gangs: Eli, who handles logistics, money, and hostile takeovers; Kevin, the gang’s publicist, fixer, and cook; and Neena, the getaway driver.

It’s the Saints against the world as they fight to be the last gang standing, so they’re going to need the best guns, cars, and equipment. Luckily, The Boss has access to a large array of guns they can paint to their liking, highly customisable vehicles such as cars and boats, and a wingsuit to fly around the city in. Plus, the Boss can level up and gain new abilities as they rampage through Santo Ileso.

However, that’s all going to need money. A lot of it. So you are going to need to take over a few businesses to fund your gang war. These Criminal Ventures allow you to play a variety of activities such as dumping toxic waste to pulling off heists and, of course, committing insurance fraud by throwing your body into traffic.

While the reboot isn’t going to cater to fans who love the first two Saints Row games, it looks like it will be a fun experience to play through — especially with the much-improved character customisation, which you can download for free right now. Seriously, it’s really good.

Saints Row (2022) will be released this week on 23rd August 2022 for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, Google Stadia, and the Epic Games Store.
