Hogwarts Legacy - What Are the Unforgivable Curses

Take a wild ride on the dark side of the Wizarding World and learn about the most powerful spells in Hogwarts Legacy.

Hogwarts Legacy
The Unforgivable Curses. Three spells that would get you thrown in Azkaban for life. Only the most power-hungry or desperate would ever use them, such as Sebastian Shaw of Slytherin, who is willing to explore the Dark Arts to save his little sister — which is why, in Hogwarts Legacy, it can be part of your vast array of spells if you choose to pursue the Dark Arts as well. So what are they and do they do?
Imperius Curse - Imperio
Known as the Mind Control Curse. Need some lowly whelp to do your bidding but they just won’t listen? Cast Imperio and they’ll obey you, no questions asked… mostly because they are unable to control their own actions, and you may or may not have permanently destroyed their mind. Fun times.
In the game, casting it on an enemy will cause them to attack their own allies for the duration of the spell. They also take less damage and inflict a status effect on other enemies which makes them take increased damage. Tougher foes might be able to resist it, so it's best for mob fights against overwhelming odds.
Cruciatus Curse - Crucio

This is the Torture Curse. Utterly despise someone? Inflict them with Crucio and laugh as they experience a unique pain that will push them over the brink of insanity. You can ask the Longbottoms about that. Oh wait, you can’t!
In the game itself, casting it on someone will take them out of the fight while also dealing damage over time, which is great for dealing with particularly annoying enemies and managing crowds.
Avada Kedavra
The Killing Curse. It just kills people in a bright green flash. I… I don’t know what else to say here. It just does a really good job at ending lives. You know, Voldemort should’ve just thrown baby Harry Potter out the window instead of doing a fancy light show…
In Hogwarts Legacy, it retains its instant kill effect. No matter how powerful the enemy is, they all die the same painful death. It also can’t be protected against. What holds back Avada Kedavra is its long cooldown time, but can be mitigated with certain potions. Also, you’re left a sitting duck during its casting so it’s best for single targets and tough opponents.
These three curses are extremely powerful, and with the right build, can destroy waves with just one cast of Avada Kedavra. However, you don’t need to sacrifice your good record to have fun with these spells. Certain editions of Hogwarts Legacy (such as the Deluxe Edition) will allow you access to the Dark Arts Arena in the Forbidden Forest, where you can use those spells even without learning them first.
So, do the ends justify the means, or is there always another solution?
