Jujutsu Kaisen: Cursed Clash Hands-On Impressions

In terms of gameplay, it’s a pretty simple game. After all, it’s a 2v2 action brawler, so if you like fighting games, then it could be right down your alley. The controls are easy enough to use, and there are some fun joint attacks that you can perform with your allies. The fights have a pretty decent progression system, so naturally, your enemies get a little more challenging with every level you play.

If you’re more of a fan of single-player gameplay, then the story mode is the right choice for you. Personally, I tend to prefer my fighting games single-player, but I know that I’ll have to try out online co-op at one point, as there are certain items in the store that you can only unlock this way. Generally, through story mode, you can play through the mainline story of the Jujutsu Kaisen series, with the story itself being shown via screenshots of the anime. It’s fully voice-acted, and you can change the audio language to English or Japanese, depending on whether you prefer dubbed or subbed.

While you progress through story mode, you can unlock a relationship tree, with each relationship growing stronger as you progress through the story. Through this, you can unlock new outfits, get Juju Points — the currency system of the game — and gain access to different short stories that offer some light slice-of-life moments.

Juju Points are easy to get, and with them, you can go to the store and upgrade your characters. Buy cursed tools to increase your stats, items to help you in battle, and some extra character models and voice clips. If you’ve played any Shonen fighter game before, you’ll get the drill. 

As you perform in battle, you’ll be given different tasks to accomplish to gain a full percentage. These can range from finishing with an awakened move or performing a joint attack on your enemy. By having these tasks, you can consider these elements as you battle, and they can help you when you’re thinking of the best combos to use.

Personally, I like how when you’re controlling your ally, you can decide on the best fighting style via the directional buttons. Your ally can be aggressive, defensive, or cooperative, allowing you to have a bit more leeway when battling your enemies.

You can also practice your skills in free battle, where you can battle against NPCs, and it’s a nifty way to get used to the controls. While they’re not difficult, there’s no doubt that all fighting games can benefit from a little bit of battle outside of story mode. Of course, if you enjoy battling other players, you can access online battles, and these are all ways to get Juju Points.
