Tales & Tactics
In case you missed it, a fantastic title is coming out soon, and it mixes numerous genres into a phenomenal game: Tales & Tactics is a roguelike squad-based autobattler that is made in a Tabletop RPG setting. Although that's a considerable mouthful just to introduce the genres, this upcoming wonder arrives to us thanks to Table 9 Studio and Yogscast Games, and I can't wait to tell you all about it!
The Story
Starting off, thanks to its TTRPG roots, Tales & Tactics has a lot to offer when it comes to its narrative and roleplaying immersion. The story that unravels does so under the fully-voiced Game Master, and the title promises a wide and colourful cast of characters comprised mostly of enemy challengers that we will face throughout our journey! Aside from having their own special abilities, they all have their own personality and even react according to how you treat them throughout the story.
One of the charming aspects of the narrative is that the events are hand-written by the developer, and that, depending on how you react during them, the outcome of your run is impacted by it! And for those who really love getting into the roleplay immersion, there are tons of fantasy creatures to discover, from Treefolk and Fae creatures to Skeletons and Ghouls; there's something for everyone here!
The story is simple: the goal is to get to the Grand Tournament, which happens every year and is an ultimate test of skill that great, eager heroes look forward to. Meet all sorts of champions on your road from start to finish, but remember to be careful how you treat everyone you meet!
The Gameplay
Of course, any TTRPG fan will know that the story isn't everything, and with the roguelike, autobattler, and strategy tags on top, it has to have depth in gameplay, too!
In this case, throughout the campaign, you'll collect tons of characters from a large selection of units; each one has its own combination of traits and archetypes that you'll (ideally) keep in mind to mix and match in your squad! In order to come out victorious, you'll need to find the best synergy to really dominate on the battlefield, but that won't be enough.
Having the right units isn't the only winning aspect here, as we'll need to keep in mind which ones get equipped and with what to maximise our potential. Thankfully, defeat is not the end due to the roguelike mixture, as with every loss comes new opportunities to unlock new features and aim for bigger challenges!
