Get Ready For the Next Battle!
TEKKEN 8
If, like us, you have fond memories of the TEKKEN series, then you’re probably eagerly anticipating the release of the latest in the franchise: TEKKEN 8. But what’s new in this instalment that separates it from its predecessors? We’re here to provide a glimpse into some of the new features and mechanics introduced in BANDAI NAMCO’s newest fighting game!
Revamped and New Mechanics
Although the basic mechanics still very much feel like that tried and true TEKKEN gameplay, the tweaks and additions only improve on the rock-solid gameplay formula. Perhaps the most prolific addition to TEKKEN 8 is the Heat System. See that gauge underneath each character’s health bar? That’s Heat! A constant offence will lead to getting the most out of this 10-second timer (which pauses if your opponent is downed) and with various moves that can only be performed whilst in this mode, it can turn the tide of battle in your favour very quickly! Whether it’s the Heat Engager that closes the distance between fighters or the Heat Smash that causes massive damage, this new mechanic doesn’t entirely change the core gameplay but does a great job in providing an extra level of depth to it.
The Rage System makes a welcome return, which gives those on the brink of defeat some extra oomph to their attacks. Rage Arts — first introduced in TEKKEN 7 — are also present, and from the ones we’ve seen so far (in combination with the new animations and improved visuals) look better than ever! No one move can provide players with a lifeline more than these devastating special attacks, so even if you’re close to victory, watch out for these!
Finally, we have the Recoverable Gauge. When certain moves are blocked, part of the damage taken will remain on your health bar. Get a quick combo or Heat move in before your enemy, and you’ll recover that health. Essential when up against a fighter that likes to utilise air combos!

Game Modes Galore!
Despite Arcade Mode being a staple seen throughout the TEKKEN franchise, this time around is something extra special with the inclusion of Arcade Quest. Want to capture the magic of an arcade setting but don’t want to get consistently pummelled online? This may be exactly what you’re looking for in a single-player mode, as your customisable avatar challenges various computer-controlled opponents that will adapt to how you play. It’s packed full of references to older games in the series, and you’ll be able to explore the arcades, cheer on other fighters, and hone your craft. Featuring so much more than a standard arcade mode, Arcade Quest is one we’re very excited to play!
Whilst not a new mode for the series, the next chapter in the Mishima saga looks to be the most stylistic one yet. With scenes that look like they’d fit right into a Hollywood blockbuster and 32 alternative “what if” scenarios that let you see the story unfold from each of the base game’s characters, “The Dark Awakens” is set to be the biggest and most detailed story ever seen in a Tekken game! And don’t worry if you don’t know your Jin from your Hwoarang, as the detailed recap of each prior game makes this as painless as possible for first-timers!
TEKKEN 8 - Ultimate Edition
So, that was everything new that’s been announced for TEKKEN 8; not too bad, right? There’s still a lot of returning features we didn’t touch on, so there’s plenty more to do in this robust 3D fighter! We hope to see you on the battlefield when TEKKEN 8 releases on 25th January 2024.
