About Total War WARHAMMER II – The Silence & the Fury

About this DLC

This Lords Pack for Total War: WARHAMMER II introduces two new Legendary lords for the Lizardmen and the Beastmen. Each leads their own faction and features new characters, units, unique gameplay mechanics and narrative objectives.

Formed of living bronze, the rage-filled Doombull, Taurox, is nigh-on invincible – save for one area on his gargantuan neck. The Chaos gods whisper to him of a ritual which can eliminate this weakness, but the promises of the ruinous powers are seldom what they seem…

Meanwhile Oxyotl, the revered Chameleon Skink and master of stealth, scents the machinations of Chaos and rallies his cohorts. Taurox must be stopped at all costs, lest a new tide of Chaos sweeps the world. When the Silence meets the Fury in a final confrontation, who will prevail?

Beastmen: Taurox

After embarking on a bloody rampage through Talabecland, Taurox was rewarded by the dark gods with a body of brass… and still he thirsts for slaughter! As he wins battles, Taurox gains Momentum, and his army can replenish action points to fight and fight again. The longer his kill-streak continues, the greater the gifts bestowed upon him by the ruinous powers. He and his Beastmen hordes will ultimately need to locate the Heart of Darkness, where he will face Oxyotl in a final, decisive battle.

Lizardmen: Oxyotl

A chameleon Skink of high renown, Oxyotl has a long history of fighting – and succeeding against – the otherworldly forces of Chaos. His prescience enables him to detect where the forces of chaos will strike next and, utilising the network of lost Secret Sanctums across the world only he can capture and develop, Oxyotl can choose which threats to tackle, and reap the rewards of victory. Oxyotl can instantly travel between his capitol, his unique mission areas, and any Secret Sanctums he has rediscovered. Ultimately, he must travel to the Heart of Darkness and face the hordes of Taurox in a final, desperate battle.

Keep your eyes peeled for more information on the rest of the roster in July!

I am generally not a fan of additional content, but the new mechanic are fun and the Beastmens really needed some love.

Silence and the Fury finally makes Beastmen interesting and adaptive without having to constantly re-crush enemies you don't want to thanks to the totems, and the gameplay for lizardmen becomes a lot more driven with the required missions for the new Legendary Lord. Downside: Beastmen become ridiculously good. They'd be OK against human opponents, but AI has no idea what to do about the totems, and they're easy to keep out of your bloodgrounds, making the campaign a bit too easy. The new Skinks finally add a cheaper set of decent units for the Lizardmen, giving some options for the early game or for raiding parties compared to the old forced-turtling they had. However, the flaw is that only a couple of the Lizardmen Legendary Lords can use them well The campaign quests for the Vortex aren't otherwise massively interesting compared to other DLC, but they're solid enough campaigns.

I think this was a good capstone DLC for the Total War: Warhammer 2 franchise. It offers some very nice units for both the Beastmen and Lizardmen races in the game and the Legendary Lords do have some robust campaign mechanics as well. However, I will say that this DLC is far more valuable for the Beastmen side of things, primarily because newcomers to the franchise can save a lot of money by purchasing this DLC and getting the entire Beastmen roster along with one of their best Legendary Lords for half the price of getting The Call of the Beastmen DLC (which would also require the purchase of Total War: Warhammer in order to play them in Total War: Warhammer 2). On the Lizardmen side of things, I think this DLC was a missed opportunity for Creative Assembly to rework some of the Lizardmen campaign mechanics, which are a bit dull compared to the newer races added to the game. Hopefully, the Lizardmen will get a great campaign rework in Total War: Warhammer 3 along with an FLC of Tetto'eko and Chakax, similar to what the Dwarves got alongside this DLC when it released. Overall, I would still recommend this DLC for fans of the franchise, as well as newcomers who are not sure if they would like the Beastmen playstyle and are reluctant to sink $20 on the older Beastmen DLC.
