So this is tricky but the more I think about it, the surer I am that I can't recommend this game.
I was exited to play it because I love adventure games and I LOVE the style. Sadly, the style is the only positive thing I can really say about AER.
Adventuring is not much of an exerience. There a a few island groups but only one or two of each have something to explore on them. And here I am even including those who only have little holographic people you can "discover". The world in general is very empty and disappointing. I get that the story is about the people missing from the world for some reason but the world does not feel like the people who once lived there disappeared, it feels liek there never were people to begin with really.
The whole story is another minus from me. You are thrown in to the game, get a few speech bubbles (no audio) that talk about some kind of pilgrimage that the player (= Auk) is going on. (I'd also like to mention that most of the story can be missed because it's in form of writing that can be found and read.) But after that you don't really know what you are supposed to do. I went to each and every island and was still lost so I looked up a guide and only then found the important locations. They are hidden so well sometimes that I didn't see them or didn't know that to do with them. The controls were another problem here, let me explain.
After the little into you are introduced to the function of turning into a bird and flying. During these few second, all other controls are shown on screen. But while you are still trying to get a hang of flying you can't read them propperly. I know NOW that I can use a lamp to do certain things. But since the controls were only on screen for a moment I DIDN'T KNOW THAT. Thank you very much. It is also never explained what you need the damn lamp for, so you can walk through the whole world without knowing that with the lamp you can see the "ghosts" of the missing people.
And now, the last, and for me at least, most annoying thing: the controls are INCREDIBLY inprecise. Jumping is this weird mix of jumping and flying and takes sooooooooo long. You also often jump to places you never wanted to go and never indicated to go. Because of this you often fall down from somewhere and have to walk up XY floors again to try over (and to maybe fall down again because why now?). The most annoying, however, is flying. I never liked flying or swimming in games as it is often very difficult to navigate....
