About Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

About this game

Developed and published by Beamdog.

Experience the Enhanced Edition of Baldur's Gate, a story-driven 90s RPG set in the world of Dungeons & Dragons. In the Enhanced Edition, the game is run through the upgraded and improved version of the Infinity Engine! It includes the entire Baldur's Gate adventure, including the Tales of the Sword Coast expansion pack and never-before-seen content.

The Setting

In Baldur's Gate, you've been forced to leave your home due to some mysterious circumstances that have thrown you into the path of conflict that has the Sword Coast on the brink of war.

Begin Your Adventure

Create and customise your hero, recruit brave allies into your party, and venture off to explore the Sword Coast! Throughout your journey, you'll find more than just adventure and profit: you'll find the truth once and for all. But remember: actions have consequences.

Beloved Heroes

The original release of the game offered 11 playable characters plus dozens of subclasses to choose from, and you could recruit some heroes to help you along the way. The Enhanced Edition adds three new recruitable heroes and new player voice sets to further customise your hero!

A Classic

Baldur's Gate set a new standard for similar games ever since it came out in the 90s, and now it's back and better than ever! In addition to the content everyone knows and loves, you can also expect the new challenge of The Black Pits — arena-style battles — and new difficulty settings for you to better tweak the game to your liking; now it's possible to focus more on exploration and story than combat and survival! In total, there are over 400 improvements to the original game, including support for high-resolution and widescreen displays!

You know people love remakes, a remake holds a piece of nostalgia, a piece of someone’s childhood within it. But when the remake’s a complete success its importance is automatically elevated to another level such is the case with the Baldur’s gate remakes. A classic, RPG game brought to life, with better shaders and control panel, is nothing but a hit among the old fans, hitting them with their gaming nostalgia making them reminiscence the good old days. One of the greatest console western RPGs, to ever come out back in the 2000s Baldurs gate has made a pretty big name for itself, which is something not to be overlooked. With the third game still in early access and in development stated to be released sometime next year let’s take a deep dive into its highly successful predecessors. ! About Baldur’s Gate I ! Spawned from the popular DnD ( short form for Dungeons and Dragons Franchise ) Baldur's Gate is a series of role-playing games set in the Forgotten realms Dungeons and Dragon campaign setting. The game has spawned two series, known as the Bhaalspawn Saga and the Dark Alliance, both taking place mostly within the western Heaterlands, but the Bhaalspawn Saga extends to Amn and Tethyr. The Dark Alliance series was released for consoles and was critically and commercially successful. The Bhaalspawn Saga was critically acclaimed for using pausable real-time gameplay, which is credited with revitalizing the computer role-playing game (CRPG) genre. Originally launched for the Playstation 2, in 2012 it was announced by Atari that Beamdog and Overhaul Games would be making remakes of the original games. The series was revived thanks to this, bringing in new and old fans alike to the franchise, which also subsequently lead to the ongoing Baldurs Gate III, which is currently still in beta and is handled by larian studios who are renowned for their divinity series of games. Baldur's gate is considered a classic for a reason, it practically defines the RPG genre. Well written, well balanced, but honestly a bit too far to the slow side for my tastes (notably movement is quite boring at times due to taking significant time with very little happening during)

Baldur's Gate has left an undeniable legacy on role-playing games, and the Enhanced Edition improves upon a game that has influenced some of the biggest titles in the genre - making it a complete version of a classic.

TDLR: I only really recommend it if you're playing it out of some kind of historical interest

Of particular note though - as Bioware's first crpg, this game influenced the entire genre for decades, especially in the area of companion characters having their own personalities/stories and forming a relationship with the Player Character. BG+TotSC is a lot of content to play through, and the Enhanced Edition adds even more with some new companions which have their own quests. I played with two of the new companions in my party, Neria the Wild Mage and Rasaad the Monk, and both were well voiced and fill in well with the other companions. The Enhanced Edition also imports a lot of options and rules from BG2 back into BG1, mostly giving more options in character creation, and not a lot I noticed to be honest, but the higher resolutions and being able to zoom in and out are nice additions. Whether Baldur's Gate holds up in 2024 is a bit of mixed bag. The game does require a bit of brain power, it's not super hard, but playing on normal difficulty required me to pay attention to what my party was doing, and to what items and spells they used. It's not fully voiced, the voice acting is spread out, here and there, so there is a fair bit of reading. There's no turn-based option in combat, it's all real-time with pause, but you can pause as often as you like, and I think a lot of the most difficult battles are actually optional and not part of the main story. Historically - Baldur's Gate is interesting, as it essentially killed off turn based crpgs in favour of the real-time with pause, only for Baldur's Gate 3 to go turn-based 25 years later. Earlier D&D crpgs like the Gold Box series, (1988-1992), had been turn-based, but following BG1, the Neverwinter Nights games were all real-time with pause. Also as Bioware's first game, this is their first attempt at companions, previous crpgs hadn't really put much effort into your party members, you either created all of them yourself, or they were just kinda non-people who join you. BG1 is the first game I remember where members of my party loved and or HATED each other. In my first playthrough, at the end of the first major quest in the game, my party had a fight, I had to pick sides, and two companions were left dead in the dirt. Romance is actually now possible between your character and the 3 new companions created for the Enhanced Edition. (Wasn't an option in the original BG1) In Dungeons and Dragons terms, BG1 is using the 2nd Edition rules to tell a fairly standard campaign story where your party,...
