A good way of describing the gameplay would be to say that it's kind of like classic God of War with vampire powers... and coop.
This works so well that it's easily one of my favorite games. It also looks incredible considering that it only takes up 2 GB on disc.
Bound together:
The premise of the game is that a vampire and human get magically linked and then have to save the world. Along the way, you have lots of choices that will lean more towards vampire or human allegiances and the game really acknowledges the same so they feel meaningful.
The characters are also pretty well done. In fact, Father Bartholomew is one of my all-time favorite characters in that both his motivations and the actions derived from them make sense in the context of the story.
Good pacing:
The pacing and checkpoints in this game are well-done in a way which used to be the norm and is actually a rarity now. The game maintained a steady pace, always challenging but never unfair.
There are two difficulty settings: Normal and Hard. My brother and I played on Normal and we were able to get most of the best gear at the very end of the game just before the final battle which like the rest of the game, felt like exactly the right pacing.
Coop or single-player:
This game was clearly built around coop (which works fine Via Remote play Together) but you can also play it in single-player simply by switching characters (coop is a bit easier though.)
One thing to note is that for a second player to play, you just load the game and then have a second player join by pushing start when you are near a checkpoint. This means that it is up to you how much of the game you want to do alone and how much you want to do in coop.
The two characters have distinct skills (one is melee while the other is ranged, one can force push while the other force pulls, etc) so they really do complement each other very well. This enhances the story which is good in a satisfying, Conan the Barbarian type way.
Story takes itself seriously:
It isn't played for laughs or winking at the camera; it's completely sincere in being about sexy vampires, a variety of villains including a succubus, an order of crusaders, and a great threat to the lives of millions of people centered on the destruction of the moon and the summoning of an elder demon. There are a LOT of cutscenes and they use the in-game assets so they enhance the gameplay rather than taking you out of it.
This honestly feels out of place in the...
