About Carto

About this game

Carto is a charming adventure game wrapped around a unique, world-altering puzzle mechanic. Use this power to explore mysterious lands, help a quirky cast of characters, and guide Carto on her journey back to her family.

Separated from her Granny during a storm, young Carto must use her innate cartography powers to map and manipulate the world around her on her quest to be reunited. As she discovers new “pieces” of the game map, players can rearrange them to shape the levels themselves - unlocking new paths, puzzles, and story moments.

Carto will traverse strange new lands, learn their cultures, and enlist the help of new friends along the way in this hand-crafted adventure.

  • Meet a colorful cast of characters and learn about their unique cultures
  • Bask in lush, hand-drawn visuals across a variety of biomes

I played the demo for the game and was able to get a cheap key for it. I was eager to play the game as the demo was really fun and the idea of the whole thing is interesting: solving puzzles by manipulating the map. it worked well in the demo and I was looking forward to the rest of the game. Sadly, I was disappointed. While most people seem to have had a lot of fun playing it, my experience differed. The game looks amazing and the story is somewhat there (nothing that special though), music is nice and everything. But: controls on keyboard are HORRIBLE and it becomes such a chore to play this game because of unintuitive keybindings (you can't even change) and constant mistyping. The puzzles also turn out to be very very weird later on. I had to look up a guide more times than not to solve a "puzzle" because the solution was just so... stupid? and nothing i would have come up with myself. Might just be a "me" problem, maybe I think differently than the game wants me to think like but it just didn't work for me. Wanna catch fish in a lake? Better make the lake look like the fish u wanna catch! WTF??!?!? The gameplay apart from the puzzles is a whole lot walking back and forth, across the whole map (yes, you can just move the map pieces but that is even more work than just walking there). I also don't think the original 20 bucks for the game is justified, playing though it takes ~ 5 hours.
