About Cris Tales

About this game

Experience Past, Present, and Future simultaneously in this gorgeous, indie love letter to classic JRPGs.

Cris Tales is a gorgeous, indie love letter to classic JRPGs with a new perspective. Peer into the past, act in the present, and watch as your choices dynamically change the future -- all on one screen as you play! Join the newly awakened Time Mage Crisbell and her fantastical companions on their journey across a dark, fairytale world facing a grim future.

Crisbell must embark across Crystallis and the four Kingdoms in a bid to stop the powerful Time Empress and rewrite the future of the world and all those living in it. Along the way, she’ll meet and recruit powerful allies with their own unique stories and skills like Matias the Frog and Willhelm the Child Mage.

As she explores the world and meets her unique companions, Crisbell will have to make choices with far-reaching consequences for the people she meets – consequences that will impact the world you’ll experience in real-time throughout your journey. Each companion will be invaluable as you face these choices and the myriad enemies who stand in your way. Will you buffet them with attacks, or discover creative ways to use Crisbell’s time powers to alter the reality of each fight?

Beautifully hand-drawn 2D art is animated frame by frame to bring the branching pasts and futures of each region, enemy, and NPC to life across more than 20 hours of gameplay. While the game has a very colorful art style, and even the mechanic for being able to see into the past present and future at the same time being a unique concept, unfortunately the execution was poorly done, and by this I mean is that the current version is just very gimicky, and you are not allowed to use it all the time, you are only able to when the developers allow you to use it, and this game doesn't give you the freedom to play exactly like you want, since you could be a very clever person and think ahead for some quests and stuff, but because the developers did not program sequence breaking into the game, even though you might know how to move the story forward, you are not able to unless the NPCs or events in the plot, give you permission to interact with whatever objects you had already found, and this is just very tedious and frustrating because a beautiful game world just begs to allow for free exploration, but all the linearity in everything you are allowed to interact with just kills the immersion and fun factor. The only thing that I can honestly praise this game for, is the combat system because you can form some pretty great strategies, with the unique time jump in battle mechanic, and despite the characters starting out real weak and simple, by the time you start to unlock skills that give the team synergy, you can have a blast with all the different combinations you can pull off. It is sad though that unfortunately some battle segments are completely unwinnable, because they are supposed to be scripted losses, but you you are not really told which are like that, because some segments where you could have lost, if you actually won them you can get some worthwhile goodies, like the one at the start with the wolves where despite it being challenging, if you manage to win it then you can save a lot of money with the reward you get. While I'd like to talk about the game more, I haven't finished it but based on what I played so far, while I've had some fun with it, I do not like being caged in areas forced to complete mandatory quests and sidequests, so I cannot really recommend that experience to people, I also do not think that the game is worth the $40 at full price, so only if you are interested in a JRPG type of game that has some unique stuff, can I recommend this game but only mostly if you manage to get it on sale. After continuing to play the game, I actually got stuck in the 3rd city you visit, and I contacted the customer...
