"A good PC remaster for those who do not like mods. Dark Souls remains awesome, but don't expect a leap like comparable to the CoD remaster."

It's a good game

This game burrowed itself deep into my brain starting in November of 2011 when I saw my best friend ignoring the insane release hype of Skyrim. Everyone was playing Skyrim! And there he is on Xbox live just going in on some Dark Souls day after day. Around 2013 I decided to see what the f*** was up with this game for myself. My first go, I spent a month trying to beat the Asylum Demon because I stupidly didn't realize you had to progress through the side path. A whole solid month of trying to beat the first boss with a broken sword. Once I beat him, I said this isn't for me. About 2 years later I gave it another shot and this time found the better weapon to finally make my way to the Firelink Shrine in considerably less time. However, between the Stone Knights in Darkroot Garden and poison damage in Lower Undead Burg, I once again said f*** this. I thought I would revisit Dark Souls sooner, but I eventually left home and the Xbox behind. December 1st, 2021, with Elden Ring on the horizon, I needed to make a decision if soulsborne games are for me. 25 days and 47 hours of playtime later, yes, yes they are for me. Praise the sun.

I loved this game, and while it isn't perfect, I'm in love with the series and think that its a must play for anyone into the souls-like genre.

This was my first Souls game, and so far I have enjoyed it immensely. While being incredibly punishing, it is also rewarding when defeating bosses and getting further than you did before you died. This game is incredible, but it is not for the faint-hearted.

The best version of an amazing game. Hard, obtuse and confusing, but utterly fascinating and engrossing combat. Arguably the most interesting lore of the entire From Software catalog. The combat is not as fluid as its sequels and is showing its age a bit, but the interconnected world is by far the most engrossing of the whole Souls series.

I had lots of fun with the old PC version with a few mods added in. This version actually doesn't really need mods to run decently in my experience. I enjoy it because it prizes exploration and patience over raw reflexes, don't be scared because the game isn't nearly as difficult as some "hardcore gamers" make it out to be and what is there is due to the game being a bit too cryptic at times when it comes to character and weapon stats. Be warned that this is primarily made with a gamepad in mind even if mouse and keyboard are technically supported, unlike the original PC version though it doesn't throw a fit if there are other Direct Input peripherals plugged in while you use a Xinput pad. In general if you are on PC and want to get into souls-like this is the game to start with, the second game while playable seems to somewhat think the difficulty was the entire point of this game (it isn't) and the third game havily references this game.
