Daymare 1998 wasn't for me. It is heavily Resident Evil "inspired" and looks kinda good in the trailer and screenshots but actually playing it is a whole different story: - characters are not introduced propperly, i never really cared much about them - characters have little to no facial expressions, "dead eye syndrome" and bad voice acting - ammunition is labled in a military (?) way and figuring out what ammo goes in which gun or which ammo might be more useful in a specific situation is a pain - hitboxes are weird, sometimes the game doesn not recognise a hit (or registers it with a weird lag), items glitch out often and you have to dance around them before you find the sweet spot that allows interacting with it - a lot of information and documents you have to read outside of the game on a website, this majorly breaks immersion, for some puzzles you have to look up online information as well (as much as i like puzzle games this just doesn't fit into a shooter survival game!) I could go on an on with this list, the game just isn't great, very buggy, very hard, very frustrating.

The combat is clunky but has genuinely a lot of interesting aspects. Especially the reloading with having to reload with magazines that have to be reloaded from the inventory lends itself to incredibly stressful moments. The shotgun sadly does away with this, I wish they had fully commited to the bit. The characters, while simple, are well executed with decent voice acting and direction. They are clearly not industry veterans but they get the job done. The story is nothing you have not seen before, again clearly inspired by RE. They do however put their own interesting spin on it, especially with the latter part of the game. Saying a lot more would spoil the impact quite a bit.

Decent little Residentesque Game. Pros: -Standard but decent story for the Genre. -Standard mechanics and gameplay you expect for the Genre. -Some of the areas are lovingly designed and crafted. Parts of it are AAA quality which shows the dedication of the team. -The voice acting was pretty good all things considered. Some of the lines were ballsy and you can tell the developers were having a great time. Cons: -The controls are unresponsive and like dragging your feet through mud. Had to smash the mouse a few times to bring my weapon up, that feature has a mind of its own. (I did not choose tank mode either). -You can easily tell where the developers purchased gaming assets or made their own. The character face modeling and texturing are amateur at best. - By the end of the game, I couldn't care be bothered to care about the story. Get it on sale and play it casual.

Nice, athmospheric survival-horror-game that started as a fan-remake of resident evil. It ended up being a pretty decent alternative that clearly emulates the classic-capcom-vibe but also knows how to deliver these. Clear recommendation to fans of the genre and the RE-franchise. Played on Steam Deck, works great.
