About Dead Cells

About this game

Developed and published by Motion Twin.

Engage in the ever-changing and -challenging roguelite and metroidvania (RogueVania) with Dead Cells! Explore countless areas, get over a hundred weapons and skills, use special powers, fight bosses, and emerge victorious!

RogueVania

Dubbed a "RogueVania" title, you'll embark on classic roguelite gameplay, featuring procedurally-generated worlds with ever-changing builds and progression through death and perseverance, and the exploration-based features of metroidvania, with numerous abilities that you unlock, opening new passages in the levels you explore.

Git Gud (In 2D!)

Dead Cells features the fair but arduous gameplay style of the soulslike action and brings it to a 2D setting! Create a build that'll help you decimate five bosses, perfectly block their attacks, dodge, and explore 17 areas filled with upgrades and unlockables that change every time you visit them.

Create Your Build

Change your build on the fly as you get numerous other pieces of equipment that'll fit nicely into your build for that run. Heavy-hitting weapons, light and fast attacks, or even bow and arrows and traps! With over 150 weapons, traps, items, and skills, no two builds will ever be the same.

Tick Tock!

The faster you go, the more rewards you'll get at the end! Rush through 2D levels, but risk making mistakes and taking damage, or take your time and unlock upgrades at a slower rate — if you change your mind, you can always tackle it again in your next run!

Numerous Paths to Unlock

As you unlock new permanent abilities, get access to new areas to explore and discover, with branching levels that'll work better for different builds. Whether you choose to explore the Sewers, Ossuary, or Ramparts, you'll have a challenge waiting to face you!

New & Fresh Updates

Dead Cells is still receiving continuous updates to keep the game fresh and new for everyone coming in — newcomers and those that have mastered the gameplay.

Right off rip I loved this game all the way through. I have been playing lots of other similar games like hollow knight, have a nice death, etc. If you dig that style this is one to check out, for me it was love at first site.

This game somewhat scratches the itch of a roguelike game, while advertising itself as a "search and action" type game, but as clear from the name taking inspiration from a certain other hard game, it's really difficult. Often annoyingly so. However, the graphics are a gorgeous pixel design and the music, while not leaving a lasting impression, is pretty good. Overall, pretty happy with this one.

One of the best rougelike 2d side scrollers I have ever played. I easily put over 100 hours into this game. Well worth it!

It takes a while to get into the rhythm of the combat. every death is a learning exp. You have to learn the enemies as well as the different items and weapons. Need to have patience with that game as the learning curve takes a while. Be prepared to die a lot.

Dead Cells is as charming as it is addictive. A Castlevania/Metroidvania side-scroller, it's one of the few games where dying is not a frustration thanks to the new opportunities that it opens up.

overrated but generally good

It's good. It's great even. But it feels HUGELY overrated. But it's going to be somewhat subjective too. The art style is amazing. Absolute top tier. The references to other indie gems, also top tier. I don't think I'd call anything else top tier, but I would call it all very good still. Platforming is on the medium end, but they did make an effort with trap rooms. Some of the biomes did a great job with traps that can work for or against you. But in general. Combat gameplay is good, but not amazing. I do not like hangtime while attacking (like floating in the air while you land strikes). Some people do. It looks "cinimatic" in a way (to me a dumb way). But I really get a lot of satisfaction out of of the swing animation happening while you are moving vertically. It's much more thrilling to time those attacks. Some weapons don't do this, but they're the exception. For difficulty, I'm not hung up on this. But I beat the game on my first day, 6th run. Runs are pretty short. Other roguelights took me much longer to get to that point. Dead Cells still has PLENTY of replay value through various means despite this. It's just a bummer to beat the game at such an early stage in it. I don't have much unlocked at all. And I'm not a god at these games. Beating the bosses was a lot of spamming, tanking, and not really knowing what was going on. I did have a general gist, but not like you get when it's very important to learn boss fights and be precise. The selection of items is good on it's own, but tedious when compared to other great roguelights. It's just a bunch of random tacked on perks. When weapons do what you expect without reading, the game just has a smoother flow to it. You pick up the thing and keep playing, rather than pausing to compair stats. Just has a better flow for an action platformer. Not, it doesn't take much time to compair and choose to switch gear or not, but it's just enough to interupt flow. For 2d roguelight games, Rogue Legacy comes higher recommended for: platforming, combat, boss fights, random changes to get you to play differently, smooth flow to choices along the way, and unlock progression. For roguelight unlock progression between runs, and number of runs for your first victory, Risk of Rain (1 or 2), or Slay the Spire feels better. But, other than RoR1, very different feeling games. If you have some of these other games, and want more, then Dead Cells is still a wonderful game. But judging by what people say, and how Dead...

This game is incredibly made. The pixel animation is so smooth (comparable to Celeste) and the gameplay is just phenomenal. It's just tantalizing enough where you don't get too sad when you die, but you always play again with determination. There is a wonderful amount of strategy and so many different play styles to try out. I would recommend this game at full price any day, so why not buy it on a discount?

Dead Cells is a must-have side-scrolling rogue-like that's a perfect fit for any console. The story is drip fed to those who are seeking it out. Gameplay is perfect for anyone looking to perfect a metroidvania style of play. Casual fans can have fun too as the mechanics are easy to grasp. Those looking for a bit of a challenge will fit in here as difficulty increases with each new zone. Unlockables are excellent. Boss fights are crazy. The enemies are relentless. It's hard to put this one down.
