About Dear Esther: Landmark Edition

About this game

'A deserted island... a lost man... memories of a fatal crash... a book written by a dying explorer.'

Dear Esther immerses you in a stunningly realised world, a remote and desolate island somewhere in the outer Hebrides. As you step forwards, a voice begins to read fragments of a letter: 'Dear Esther...' - and so begins a journey through one of the most original first-person games of recent years.

Abandoning traditional gameplay for a pure story-driven experience, Dear Esther fuses its beautiful environments with a breathtaking soundtrack to tell a powerful story of love, loss, guilt, and redemption.

Key features:

  • Every play-through is a unique experience, with randomly generated audio, visuals and events.
  • Explore incredible environments that fully immerse you in the haunting island and its mysterious past.
  • A poetic, semi-randomized story like you've never experienced in a game before.
  • Stunning soundtrack composed by Jessica Curry, featuring world-class musicians.
  • An uncompromisingly inventive game delivered to the highest AAA standards.

Dear Esther: Landmark Edition has been remade with the Unity engine, featuring a full audio remaster, and the addition of a brand-new Directors' Commentary mode, allowing players to explore the island and learn what inspired the game and how it was crafted by The Chinese Room and Rob Briscoe.

I really enjoyed the game, more than I expected to be honest. The graphics are amazing and the main selling point in my opinion. The world is just absolutely beautiful. Graphics and audio (music as well as narrator voice) set such a good atmosphere - chilling and calming, very sublime - that walking through the chapters really is a joy. It just felt like taking a long walk on a small island. I have to admit, though, that I probably only got half of the story in my first playthough (very confusing and complex), I would have wished for a bit more context. But there is a exta commentary you can add amd I'm hoping it will make the story a bit clearer. I do have to say that even though I really enjoyed the experience, 10 bucks for a game you can finish in 60-90 minutes is a bit much. Maybe get it on sale of you're interested.

Tl;dr great "not game" for when you're tired of killing and need some emotional experience

It's hard to call it a game, it's more of an experience. Walking simulation doesn't really describe it, although many people think that Dear Esther started this genre. It's based on Half Life 2 engine and while at release the graphics were stunning, today they still hold up. It will take an hour or two to finish it and it's worth every penny IMHO. The views, narrator's calm voice and the story that unfolds will leave you touched. Especially the ending, I didn't expect that this will happen, although I didn't know what is going to happen at all! And those caves, simply amazing. Best chapter. You even got achievements, music is cool too. Highly recommended, if you want some calm evening in front of the computer but without killing anyone.
