About Dex

About this game

Cyberpunk goodness

Explore the futuristic city of Harbor Prime and a host of diverse locations in both physical reality and the wild reaches of cyberspace in Dex. With this Steam key, players will meet many inhabitants, answer the challenges the city has to offer, roam the neon-lit streets, and augment your character with skills and implants.

Dex is a story-driven action/stealth sidescrolling RPG with a focus on exploration and a fresh new vision of cyberspace. Discover the truth behind an enigmatic AI striving to reach the Singularity, a theoretical “event horizon” in which artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence and all bets about the future will be off. How will you play your part in the story?

PAYS HOMAGE
Designed as a tribute to the classic RPGs from the ‘90s, updated for a modern audience, Dex invites you to become part of a living, breathing cyberpunk universe as you decide which ultimate path you will embrace. Expect non-linear gameplay in dozens of hand-drawn locations, thrilling fights, sophisticated character development and much more!

BIGGER, BETTER, BRIGHTER
This Enhanced Edition features a remodeled user interface, a revamped augmented reality feature, the addition of manual saves and a host of other improvements.

YOUR OFFICIAL DEX STEAM KEY GIVES YOU:

  • Rare melding of realism and creative vision -Realistic action, mature storyline, and complex character interactions meld with hand-drawn characters, animations, and locations, arcade-style melee combat, and an original conception of cyberspace.
  • Multiple solutions to problems: Operate in cyberspace or normal reality. Overcome obstacles using skills, weapons, special equipment
  • Meaningful character progression choices: Will you be a silent assassin, a hacker, or a straightforward gunfighter? Improve your character and gear to unlock gameplay-changing upgrades that reinforce and customize your gameplay style.
  • Unique hacking mechanic: Transfer your consciousness to your avatar, overcome intrusion countermeasures, take action, and then return back to your body in a fraction of a real-time second to see the results – deactivated turrets, overloaded devices, enemies with crippled implants
  • Neo-cyberpunk: Story deeply inspired by the cyberpunk novels of William Gibson and other classical cyberpunk authors, flavored with a contemporary concept of augmented reality
  • Rich game world and mindful level design: Visit diverse locations in Harbor Prime, a futuristic city complete with luxurious skyscrapers, run-down shantytowns, and seedy red-light districts. Take part in street brawls, steal corporate data, overcome environmental hazards, and, of course, stay alive – no easy task
  • Full voice acting: Interactive dialogues using hand-drawn sprite animations, fully voice-acted by professional actors

Dex, is an short, but good slightly janky cyberpunk side scroller. Aesthetically, anyone who likes the cyberpunk genre can get a good time out of this. Gameplay is mostly jump, punch and kicks, but the feedback isn't as good as a true beat-em up likes Streets of Rage. There's guns as well but those ammo are quite scarce and should only be used in certain situations. Graphics are ok, its not ugly, and for the most part, the sound and music works for the given situation. As for the story, its your typical cyberpunk Shadowrun-ish stuff, not to spoil anything, and it works. Overall, an easy finish over the weekend game.

What is it? Deus Ex in 2d. You’re a [s]shadowrunner[/s] [s]cyberpunk[/s] a free-agent with special powers, out in the big noir city, on the run from an evil corporation. You mostly hang out and do a lot of interrelated sidequests, while waiting for a chance to take down the corp. You have the usual DE playstyle options for handling challenges, and RPG / augmentation elements to improve yourself. What’s good? Like I said, it’s Deus Ex in 2d. You get a big city to explore at your own pace, and multiple options for taking on problems. Sneak, stealthily take down, shoot, punch, or run past enemies. Hack cameras, turrets and humans. Get augmentations that allow you to pass through dangerous areas, superjump, or just punch better. A lot of interrelated sidequests with multiple options and outcomes. What’s bad? I know that “Deus Ex is a game that exists” isn’t a fair comparison to make. Even if you’re a huge DE fan, there’s only so often you can replay it, and a budget 2d game shouldn’t suffer from incessant comparisons. But still. DE exists, and is better in every way (except for the hacking). Thankfully, I’m not a huge metroidvania fan, so I don’t have that as a point of comparison (though I’m sure the md aspects were done better elsewhere as well) But even on its own merits, the game has two major flaws that will stop me from replaying it: 1. The combat just isn’t great. Whether you’re punching or shooting, it’s just meh. I ended up spending minutes waiting for a chance at a stealthy takedown instead of just rushing in and punching / shooting dudes, just because it felt much more elegant and interesting. Also, there are enemy types you can’t use takedowns against (common around the endgame, obviously), and you NEVER get an augmentation or skill that will allow you to do so. 2. The plot is terribly generic, and some of the “big choice” moments feel hollow and unconvincing. Recommended? Oh yes. I had fun playing this - up until the end, when the combat against elite enemies started to wear thin, and the flaws in the plot became apparent. Just realize that you probably won’t be replaying this once you’re done.
