"The variety makes the frequent deaths more palatable and I would probably buy a custom dedicated handheld that just played this game."

Kill Screen

80 / 100
"It is fun and addictive, but moreover it’s adrenaline-pumping and shocking in its barbarity."

Hardcore Gamer

90 / 100
"It’s a deep dark well filled with monsters and gems, equal parts platformer and reverse vertical shooter, and falling into its depths is the stuff that 1980s arcade dreams were...

You know how in Doom the game gives you a gun and tells you to kill demons with it. Downwell gives you 2 directional and one trigger buttons to go down in a well. This is the same kind of simplicity that made the original Super Mario Bros great, and it’s the kind of game design that is often overlooked. This 1bit style fits well with its music. The lore if for you to decipher. Palettes as a reward keeps the game fresh after many hours, giving the game a new look with every unlock. I don’t think I can say anything negative about this game honestly.

I first played this on the Vita where it definitely shines. The game itself isn't very long at all but the difficulty spikes are ridiculous and reward the most reflexive players. However, if you're like me and you're never going to see stage 3, it's still kind of a blast. Fast top-down Mario stomping and shooting with cool colorways to unlock. It's not too expensive that I could find anything noteworthy to complain about and I think more people should give this one a try.

So Downwell is an arcade-like game where you fall and shoot monters with your feet, recharge when you land on something, and collect coins to buy life and extra magazine capacity. I've now been playing it for more than 30 hours and I must admit it's pretty fun, and quite more-ish, as a typical playing session will be between 2 to 10 minutes, so there's always time to fit one more in! Why not give it a better rating, then? Well, the game's downfall (pun intended) is gravity and pace: it's just too damn quick, and unless you're a pro gamer with a twitchy triggerfinger and 20 mg of coffee in your blood, I'm not sure you'll ever manage to finish the game. I know I won't, and to me that's a very serious downside.

If this game had come out decades ago it would have been considered a classic on par with Pac-Man and Mario Bros. The simplicity of it is brilliant. The game play is so smooth. The animation is flawless. The replayability is endless. There are achievements for those who need it. There are "Styles" that change the way your character appears to run, but can also affect game play. The weapons and upgrades are numerous and add so much to the game. Unlocking "Palettes" changes the coloration of the game and adds another level to replayability. (I'm especially partial to Aqua.) If you at all enjoy a pick-up-and-play action platformer you must buy this. And at $3 you can't go wrong. UPDATE: This works amazingly well on my Steam Deck. If you bought a Deck this is the exact kind of game you can buy and play quickly here and there.
