I have been playing Elden Ring for a little over a week now. And while I do find the game challenging I do not think it’s overly so. I’ve been playing on steam deck and the game runs smoothly and I can say that I am happy with my purchase. It was nice too to get it at a bit of a discount on fanatical.

Elden Ring continues the spirit of gameplay style of the souls games with minor, albeit welcome, changes. I find exploration a key part of this game which is continued from the souls games but made even more rewarding with the open world system. Is it worth the ticket price? I've got a couple dozen hours in and my rule of thumb is minimum $1/hour of gameplay, I'm not worried I'll get my money's worth out of this one, but it could be a little tight. My main complaint is there's a pretty steep learning curve and you need to be persistent. It's not a casual friendly game in my opinion. Lastly, this game feels like a direct console port. No ultra-wide support, locked to 60 FPS, this is all stuff I expected to see in xbox one ports, not in a modern full price AAA game title in 2022. This is unacceptable and "fixing" it requires breaking the multiplayer system so that's a big downside if you're an ultra wide high refresh rate gamer.

I beat Margit this morning but man this castle sucks. This is a prime example of how brilliant and excruciating this game can be. You're thinking: "Nice! I'm getting good." So you run in there and get past a few guys and then you get blasted. You've learned a little, you go back and get a bit farther and get REALLY blasted. Again, you're thinking, "OK. I've got this, now." But by this point you're still thinking about passing that spot you got obliterated at and subsequently die 10 feet from the respawn point and lose all your runes. At this point it's basically, "Well, F@#$, at least now I'm not worried about runes, since they're gone." You proceed to get owned repeatedly by guys you should crush because you're still subconsciously super-pissed about your runes.

Amazing game, massive game. Would recommend going in blind, don't look up things unless you really really need to. This game will take 100 odd hours to beat, and that's just one playthrough. The difficulty feels fair.

The level of pain I felt playing this (my first "souls" game) has left suffering night terrors due the the PTSD it caused. The scenery is beautiful if you can get past the incredible monsters that are all hell-bent on your extermination.
Don't be discouraged, though. The tutorial is very thorough and useful to new players.

This is basically another souls game. So if you hate those, don't get this game. Now it is not exactly a souls game, there are differences but basically the same in that there is only one difficulty, hard and only gets harder as the game progresses. I'm not a souls player, but I do like this game. Just had to expect to die more then succeed and it's not so bad. I've come to find more challenging things are more rewarding to accomplish so I'm gonna try to complete this game.
