About Evan's Remains

About this game

Evan's Remains is a mystery-thriller puzzle adventure about finding a missing boy: Evan. The game combines logic-based platform puzzles with narrative inspired by Japanese graphic adventure games.

Gameplay:

Every time the player solves from two to three puzzles, the story goes forward and new mechanics are introduced. The challenge of the puzzles lies in the player’s ability to figure out what do rather than solve challenges based on skill. As the difficulty curve increases, the puzzles become more complex by combining two or more previously introduced mechanics.

Story:

Evan, the genius boy, has been missing for years. One day, a letter signed by him is received, claiming he’s on an uninhabited island somewhere in the Pacific Ocean. Nobody knows why, but he asked specifically for a girl named “Dysis” to go and look for him. The player will take control of this girl, who we don’t know much about. As we follow Dysis’s adventure, questions will start to be answered little by little. All of the little puzzle pieces which seemed unrelated in the beginning will now begin to slowly fit together as the truth is slowly revealed.

Overall, a pretty great story, although a very sad one with some fairly nice puzzles and nice art.

The visual style is great, and the music is pretty good. The story is certainly not what I expected, and although it is certainly a sad story, it is also pretty good, and that twist at the end, I did not see that coming at all. Throughout the game you have to piece together the story, but by the end you'll have everything revealed and explained, with I think not many things left to be confused about, well perhaps except one or two things, but very minor things.. Clover is quite a deep character, which makes sense given his situation. Some of the stuff he says is quite interesting, and I would certainly agree with him. That whole story is quite interesting. Which would you choose in such a specific situation, the lie or the truth? Well, I'm getting off topic. The puzzle platforming is fairly nice. It was interesting and fun. I didn't find it too difficult, but for those that do or simply want to focus on the story, you have the skip puzzle option, which is nice. The only bug I've seen is a sound bug if you fast forward dialog while the dialog has already started it will play the speaking tone of whoever was speaking at the time you press the option and it will stay there until the screen switches. Overall, a pretty great story and game, although a very sad one.

The game started out great and I really liked it at first. Sadly, the story really took a bad turn towards the end. You play as a girl who has been sent to an uninhabited island - or so they thought - by an organisation to find a boy called "Evan". What seems like an easy mission is everything but that. The idea for the story is great and at first i was really invested in it. The puzzles are quite nice and I enjoyed trying to solve them. There even is an option to skip them if you get stuck or just don't want to complete them. Throughout the story and the more is revealed you start making theories of what could happen etc. The twists(s) are nothing I could have thought of (which is good) but they changed the story in a way that I didn't like. The whole message is that things and money are not important but your connection to people/ the ones you love. This morphs into a "As long as you like your life everything is great, even if you've been living a lie". While the ending wants to be emotional and deep it just made me sad to see such a good story shattered into bits. The second half of the game was also mostly dialogue and cutscenes, of 3 hours gamplay, 1 1/2 hours was "game" at most, the rest was clicking though text.

The game is simply beautiful, with smooth animation, gorgeous colors and just quality pixel art! The puzzles were challenging but not too much for someone like me who is, unfortunately, often struggling in platform puzzles like these. I wll say however that an ending has never made me so angry before. I've had depressing endings in game before and can handle it, but this took the cake I think? It's probably a good thing that a game can trigger such emotions in someone, and I suppose everyone will have their own opinion on this, but personally if I am ever terminally ill and someone ever pulls a Evan's Remains on me, I hope ghosts are real so I can come back and beat their ass with my two ghost hands. My boy deserved better >:(
