It's not incredibly deep and the controls take a bit of getting used to, but once you do it's a pretty fun romp to the end. The space scenery is gorgeous as well.

🎮Gameplay
Everspace is not an experience that you can just rush your way through since it requires a significant amount of strategizing as well as gaining proficiency with its mechanics. Since each sector pushes your limits a bit further every time, it is almost guaranteed that you will make a mistake and die [spoiler]there is even an achievement called “Die”[/spoiler], and then be sent all the way back to the first zone of the first sector.
Everspace makes use of non-linear story-telling so that the story can be unraveled at your own pace. I don’t want to divulge too much into the story as there is a rather noteworthy development between sectors 1 and 3. So to just break it down slightly: You awaken on an Interceptor space cruiser with no memory or recollection of who you are or what you’ve done, your AI explains to you how the numerous factions in space are all currently at each other’s throats vying for dominance. So, it is up to you to answer those two questions but also to quell the disorder between the factions. That’s about as spoiler-free as I can make it.
The gameplay aspect revolves around moving into zones within the sector, pinpointing enemies, searching for resources and credits to craft upgrades, avoiding environmental hazards, repairing your vessel with nanobots, getting into firefights, dying, and then doing it all over again from scratch. The circle of space life so it seems. As Everspace is my first introduction to a rogue-like game, I initially struggled with the challenge, but once you’ve put about 5-7 hours in the game, you’ll have a firm understanding of the core gameplay loop, what weapons are more useful than others [spoiler]Beam Laser[spoiler] and also what resources are most valuable.
📃💪Challenges and Perks
Besides moving from sector to sector to answer two of the biggest questions within the game, you can also become distracted with challenges or as we know them side objectives. Challenges can vary from, destroying a certain number of enemy variants, taking down higher-powered enemies such as the Okar Corvette, or even just trying to reach sector 3 with 0 equipment. Completion of each of these challenges rewards you with credits that can be used for equipment, upgrades and even buying a whole new ship. If you can complete all of these challenges you will also earn an achievement [spoiler]Getting Sidetracked[spoiler]
