About Freedom Fighters

About this game

They took your freedom. It's time to take it back!

Freedom Fighters is an intense third-person action game set in an alternate history New York during the invasion of a foreign superpower. Take on the role of Chris Stone, a hard-working plumber, and rise through the ranks of the resistance to prove yourself as a charismatic leader.

Liberate supplies, scavenge weapons and use the 'recruit and command' system to grow the resistance and lead up to 12 freedom fighters into strategic conflicts throughout the campaign. Travel across the city and complete interconnected missions where your actions in one level affect the battles in another.

Originally released in 2003, IO Interactive's cult classic is now available digitally in its original form for the first time.

Critic Reviews

86 / 100
"The one area where this updated "Hitman 2" code shows great improvements is in the rag doll physics model."
85 / 100
"It's really only its brevity and restrictive save game system that keeps this game from fighting its way to the top of the genre."
40 / 100
"It matches intense, fast-paced action with a squirrely camera and imprecise aiming. Needless to say, that isn't a particularly compelling combination. [Feb 2004, p.77]"

I played this on the original Xbox. A brilliant blast from the past. Only negative is no controller support.

Amazing, so much nostalgia going through this again 😁🤙🏻. Worth if you’re like myself and love going back to these old games, which are in some ways loads better than the copy and paste trash what gets regurgitated out today.

Stood the test of time with its artsy visuals and phenomenal soundtrack. Get it!

From the intro to the ending, this game is an artwork of its time. While the graphics and gameplay are dated by today's standard, it still somewhat visually hold together with its semi-cartoonish art-style and its really atmospheric maps. But what makes this game special is its premise; an alternate-history set during the cold-war where the USSR advances an invasion right after the Cuban missile crisis. You play as a plumber who gets caught up with the rebels and the story goes on from there. What really stands out is the game's electronic-orchestral soundtrack by Jesper Kyd - which alone makes the game worth by buying.

It's a good game fun you should give it a go go go for while and then play some more or not. Lots of things to do and lots of things to find. Recommended game

First time experience, didn't play back on original release. For its age, the game holds up well. The squad commanding is fairly simple, consisting of Move, Attack, Defend, Follow. So there isn't a whole lot of strategic depth here, particularly on the regular difficulty, but what you do get is a pretty nice mix between an action-packed shooter while still being able to make some thoughtful choices. That's the main draw here for me. Despite Hollywood-esque constant shooting, nades flying everywhere, etc, the fights can be pretty lethal if you get caught out. It feels satisfying to get your squad to gradually move up behind cover (and they will use it!), while maybe you run around the side to get the advantage. The squad management system is, again, simple, but that works here because it's so fluid it doesn't interrupt the flow of your game. Story is very cheesy, and perhaps a bit dated? Very 'murrica in tone, stereotypical evil commie russians, black guy from the hood. It's almost comic book, and that was something I did enjoy in an ironic sense. The game's style is certainly quite arcadey, so don't expect anything to grip you here whatsoever. Not sure why, but I experienced some crashes later into the game. Thankfully the stages aren't super long, so I wasn't getting ruined by them. Wasn't able to find a fix but finished game. Overall, if you're wanting to grab something for a weekend that isn't full on, and you want to shoot bad guys. This is pretty nice, and I had a fun time playing. It took me about 7 hours to complete.

A totally enjoyable blast from the past, what's funny about this game is that its squad commands are by far simpler and superior to modern games.
