About Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage

About this game

Gas Guzzlers: Combat Carnage is a fast-paced addictive combat racing game for the PC. The game features many different vehicles, weapons, upgrades, on-track bonuses as well as distinctive and astonishing environments. The player starts with a low-performance vehicle and gradually works his way up by earning money in a series of challenging races. With an initial amount of money, the player buys his first car without upgrades.

The game is run through the series of events\challenges that are divided into four separate categories. Categories, tracks and vehicles are unlocked as player progresses throughout the game. After selecting the class (only the first class is enabled at the beginning) selection of events follows. At the start of the game number of events is limited but it increases in time depending mainly on player's score. Unlocked events can be played an unlimited number of times and each time player can win points and money for the selected event. The transition from the lower to the higher class is achieved by winning in the special tournament event. Besides the players, various AI simulated drivers engage in events and challenges. All AI drivers are simulated according to their parameters and settings. Computer opponents can progress and improve their vehicles in a way similar to the player's. This provides an additional reality aspect for the whole game. For each category there is an official rank roster which shows the current positions for all the drivers. The player must achieve victories on a regular basis to be consistently at the top and earn the money to maintain his vehicle and save some for a new one. All upgrades come with price tags, which rise depending on the class car type. Standard types of events/challenges are races, knock-outs and tournaments. Some events have prerequisites that have to be met before participating in the race (specific class, car type, car color, type of weapon allowed...).

  • 150+ miles of tracks and 5 different events per track
  • 12 unique weapons
  • 15 customizable cars (12+ upgrades, color, rims, stickers, etc..) , damage distribution on the vehicle
  • On-track bonuses and power ups
  • Secret tracks, cars and experience spiced with unique humor
  • Multiplayer over LAN and Internet (Dedicated server included with the game)
  • Multiplayer modes (classic race, battle race, knockout, deathmatch arena, last man standing)

Very fun combat arcade racer. In GG: Combat Carnage you battle 8 opponents in three racing modes: Classic, Battle, and Knockout. Classic: Basic "Mario-Kart" style racing mode. The course is littered with powerups (Oil Slicks, Mines, Smoke, Nitro, and Repair Damage). Taking too much damage eliminates you from the race. Battle: same as Classic but all cars have guns mounted on them. You start with a basic shotgun, but can buy stronger guns with higher capacity as you progress in the campaign mode. You also gain three additional power-ups: shield and ammo refill, and double damage. Knockout: Can be thought of as an 'endurance' battle race; all the same powerups as battle mode but the last place opponent gets eliminated each lap, In the campaign mode these races tend to be much longer than the other two, although if you're a good shot you can make them a bit shorter ;) There are two other multi-player arena deathmatch modes that can't be played in single player mode. This omission was apparently rectified in Gas Guzzlers: Extreme by adding bots. Three similar events may not seem like much variety, but I never found myself getting bored. I think a big part of it is how involved the races are compared to other racers. Take the boost mechanics for example; there are three ways to gain boost, picking up nitro power-ups, drifting, and hitting destructible objects that line the tracks. Since the AI is so fast (at higher levels) and boost depletes so quickly, you'll need to utilize all three in order to have a constant supply of boost. You need to learn pickup locations, where and how to drift, and most importantly, you need to plan what objects to hit and what objects to save for later laps, since roadside objects never respawn during a race. You'll find other aspects of the game require similar decision making, powerups often appear side by side, letting you choose offensive or defensive options, and the winding tracks often split into multiple routes or spread themselves over wide open spaces. I always felt like I was having to focus on something different in order to keep ahead of my opponents., and I am pleasantly surprised with how the AI handles the races as well. If the road splits the AI will split off too, if the track widens you'll see them spread out a bit, and they're FAST. The 'Impossible' difficulty was a bit too much for me, and I almost always will go for the hardest difficulty in a racing game. While the car selection is small I didn't...
