When I first bought God Eater 3, I had no real history or interest in the series, genre or company. I kind of liked Code Vein, which was sort of the same developers but not really since Namco Bandai is an ever-evolving shoggoth that grows more studios the more you look at it, and I've always avoided Monster Hunter because it seems like one of those games you need to sink 500 hours into to fully appreciate. I was on the lookout for something with less commitment, but still activated my primitive monkey brain with some visual progression, a funky character creator, and some fun action. God Eater 3 delivers on pretty much all of that. I have zero familiarity with "hunting games", the genre that's apparently for Monster Hunter clones and not Cabela's Big Game Hunter, I guess, but here's the gist - you and a party of ai mannequins choose a mission that's normally one of like eight maps filled with one of like eight bosses and some mooks, and just beat it with sticks until it cries and gives up. You do that about fifty million times. If it seems kinda cheaply made, it is. Between missions you return to your boxy cardboard hub to sink your resources into upgrading gear or crafting cosmetics, and sometimes watch two characters stand stock still and tell each other that the situation is getting worse. What's there is pretty thin in terms of depth or content, but I pretty much liked everything that was there. The action was pretty fun - your melee is meaty, your companions useful, and your gun can chew through entire healthbars in 5 seconds if kitted right. You get this ridiculous airdash that propels you the length of a football field and uses less stamina than a roll. Progression was fun - the game really does not expect you to play a mission more than once for materials, watching weapons evolve is cathartic and you're encouraged to tackle a weapon for every element for those double damage gains. Missions rarely take longer than 3-5 minutes and the cosmetics were fun to fiddle with, too. I even kind of liked the story - it's a pretty shounen anime hyper-apocalypse where you play as a member of a slave warrior race that's treated comically badly, but has more nuance than I expected and was pretty interesting for something that's entirely communicated by two guys standing in a room talking. It's hard to recommend God Eater 3 on its own merit, since the sense of repetitive cheapness permeates everything and nothing here is fantastic - just fun,...

A great fast paced action-hunting game, similar concept to monster hunter but faster with it's own twist. AI companions make solo play more engaging, while still offering multiplayer.
