This is a really good real-time strategy game, and you'll recognize a lot of the core systems if you've played and of the Crusader Kings or Europa Universalis. It'll also appeal to a similar group, as this game has a very minimalistic tutorial and basically just leaves you to figure things out for yourself. I played for a couple of hours alone and learnt absolutely nothing about the game, however playing with a group of more experienced friends is good as they will be able to show you the ropes, and after about 4 hours of playing with friends I now feel like I'm proficient enough with the game systems to enjoy it, however I'm not very versed in the advanced mechanics. I'd recommend this game if you have a fair amount of time on your hands and some friends to play with.

You're playing as Hungary. You want to reinstate the Austro-Hungarian Empire, but in the 20th century. You can do that. You do that. You somehow end up allying with an alternate history alliance formed between fascist Greece and Germany? Checks out. Italy is not in it? Stomp Italy. Now you're pushing the Soviets, but the UK came out of nowhere declaring war on your faction!
And that's only one of the ridiculous alternate history scenarios that may appeal to a history nerd! While you can confine the game to being historically semi-accurate, it's so much more fun to take off all the bearings and let alternate history go wild!

An extremely detailed war simulation, Hearts of Iron IV is a large-scale strategy game set during World War Two, with a particular focus on building up supplies and conquering other lands, with well over 100 playable nations. DLC included in the Cadet Edition adds new 3D models for tanks and planes, as well as 2D assets and extra leader portraits for an authentic, historically accurate experience.
