About Ikai

About this game

Ikai is a first-person psychological horror game drawing inspiration from Japanese folklore. Live the horror by the hand of its defining yokais and submerge into the superstitions of the past driven by a unique story and exploration.

Ikai embodies the spirit of the classical psychological horror genre with a defenseless main character incapable of attacking evil creatures. However, it explores a new sense of horror by making the player face the threats directly neither fleeing nor attacking.

Every mechanic of the game is meant to raise this relatable feeling of helplessness and create a tense atmosphere. The slow, precise, and natural movements as a way of interaction resemble real life’s to foster immersion in the uncanny world of Ikai.

STORY

Rumors have spread even through the most skeptical villagers, giving way to fear and hysteria. It’s not just a matter of gossip this time. The blood-stained leaves indicate that evil creatures are getting closer and closer to humans. It is believed that a new demon has turned up in the underworld. Its will is to cross the doorway into our world as soon as it finds what it is looking for. Such a situation requires the priest to head to the village, leaving the shrine under his niece’s control, the priestess.

The crowd’s fear hasn’t reached the shrine far away in the mountains, where the priestess, Naoko, works as usual, too busy to worry. Sweeping and sweeping, time goes by, with or without the priest. Without giving much importance to this sort of demon and ghost stories she ascribes to fearful children, Naoko leaves the shrine to get to the river before it gets dark. Villagers’ dreads seem to take shape in the gloomy forest. She keeps walking, increasingly tense until her doubts are dispelled; but not her fears.

She soon loses consciousness of her soul and body and falls to the ground; almost dead, almost alive. The shrine’s bell screams for help, but it is no longer a sacred place. All Gods have gone, giving way to monsters, ghosts, and spirits.

📝Story/Plot without spoilers📝 🔸 In the Japanese feudal era, you are a priestess of a shrine. Something that was supposed to be a calming and peaceful experience turns out to be a heart-stopping fearful trauma. Even with the shine of the full Moon, the demons are hiding behind the dark shadows. Will you be able to survive on your own? 🎮Gameplay🎮 🔸 Being a part of the horror genre, we all know, either this will either be a jumpscare game or a game where the ghost is constantly chasing you. In this bland common genre, most games fail to represent a fresh taste. But Ikai has a sturdy base. It emphasizes the parts which were most important for the plot. The developers have expertly designed the core elements of a horror game, which are sounds and darkness. Being a Traditional Japanese setup, the floors are made of wood. The addition of wood creaking sounds for in-house game segments worked perfectly. Not giving a brightness option is also a clever deal. These small focuses on detailing helped set up the mood quite easily. ------🔹 It all starts light-hearted with some calligraphy. But once the night falls, the environment fills with horror. From exploring the beautiful area to drawing protective seals & solving puzzles for survival, the sense of fear in you starts building up. You start gaining a sense of fear. In every encounter of Stealth or running away, you always feel like something/someone is near you. Kudos to the great sound design that can even make you scared of your own shadow! ------🔹 Coming to the interactives. At first, you feel overwhelmed with each drawer having the option to interact. But once you progress with the story, the sub-consciousness tells you which element you want to interact with. Calligraphy was a good addition, but very hard to execute. Sometimes the brush is too stiff and sometimes too soft. Previously, interactions with puzzles were also janky, but they were fixed in the newest patch. If you wanted a horror game with good audio design and demon stories, you are in for a treat! While you are trying to survive, why not collect some collectibles too? 📷Graphics📷 🔸 From start to end, I loved them! They portrayed Japanese lore perfectly. The outfits, the infrastructure, the stories, and the demons, everything was in sync. Each element compliments the overall wonderful visual art. Variation in demons is a hard task to depict. For example, there’s a demon that drops from tall trees onto the victim and crushes them, and moreover,...
