Monster Hunter Rise is the latest handheld iteration of the Monster Hunter franchise, also finding itself on PC. While much of the game is designed around pushing the limits of the Switch to the fullest, it still feels quite at home on a far beefier PC. With 60fps mode, higher resolution textures, and an already strong aesthetic, Rise looks great in higher fidelity. The increased frame rate lends itself to the game feeling even snappier, creating an overall package that any fan of Monster Hunter, or Monster Hunter-like titles, is sure to love.

Ok game but dull

The graphics are great, and combat feels good but the story is incredibly weak and most of the game is just slashing a monster over and over again for 20 minutes. Some people seem to be able to get enthralled with the game but I couldn't because I just didn't care about the story or the characters.

Fun ARPG, can be a grind

Dev

The game is a good action RPG if you don't care too much about the story. The focus is on hunting monsters and getting better gear to hunt more powerful monsters. The game can be a grind, but the variety of weapons and monsters can leave with with tens to hundreds of hours of content especially with event quests and being able to join others in quests or hunting solo for more challenge.

Embarrassing Launch

Running into a constant failed save error the entire day (a lot of people are running into this right now) and it's shameful that this is happening. Terrible launch and dev hasn't said a word about it.

Silkbind moves and the Wirebug system add a great amount of mobility to level navigation compared to World, which is a welcome evolution of the formula. All newly added monsters also have fantastic unique designs and lots of character. However, online aspects are lacking compared to its predecessor, Monster Hunter World. For example, World allowed you to search for any missions where a player had opened themselves up to multiplayer, and pick from the list of result; Rise, inversely, requires you to select a mission you've unlocked, and then wait for the game to find hosts currently playing said mission, provided there even are any in the first place. Given that the game already has quite a lot of quests, this makes finding public matches for specific quests or specific monsters much harder. There is also no real designated endgame after the story ends, giving the game a rather weak finale. Despite several post-launch content updates, I don't think any of them sufficiently remedied this, or added any particularly interesting new monsters- all of Rise's post-launch additions were variants, subspecies or returning monsters rather than any truly new monsters (like e.g. MHW's Kulve Taroth / Behemoth / Leshen). At this moment, I would recommend getting World with the Iceborne DLC over this game, because I don't think Rise's Sunbreak DLC is going to fix its online systems; but if you really enjoyed World and want something a little different, this game might do it for you. Just be prepared to do a lot of farming/grinding, because just like World, that's how progression and buildcraft works in these games. In World, it's the grind for decorations that's the problem; in Rise, it's the grind for talismans (and resources to meld the randomized ones to begin with) that's the real time waster. Above all, though, I would recommend playing this game with friends if you do want to try it. Though the gameplay can become extremely repetitive, especially with repeat farming runs, it is a game that is very much improved by playing it with a team you can banter with.
