"Monster Sanctuary is a Pokémon game smashed together with pixel-art, JRPGs, and Metroidvanias. If that's not a recipe for an indie game hit, then I don't know what is."

I initially played this game on the XBox Game Pass, and went up to the Mystical Workshop. I bought it back recently on Steam, after it got out of the Pass. This is a very enjoyable game, very well thought through. It is a mix of platforming, monster collection, strategy, duels, and secret hunting. All is very well balanced, and you'll find yourself wanting more. All the monsters have their own capabilities, and an extensive list of skills. You'll have to find the best synergies that work out for you and for specific encounters. I've never found myself completely stalled, and there's always a challenge you'll want to overcome. Secret hunting is fun, too, and requires you to look for special abilities from monsters (destroying secret walls, levitating, grappling, orbs activation, etc) to hunt for chest and more. There's also some tinkering as you'll be able to upgrade the equipment for your monsters. Light- and dark-shifting of monsters allows to to find even more synergies and strategies. Musics are also a plus. Without being exceptional, they are good enough to keep you entertained all the time. Graphics are cute, too. Very good game, you'll not be disappointed !

I absolutely love this game. It's a hidden gem. So many monsters to choose from and they all have strengths. It's a challenging game, and it makes me want to keep trying

This game continues to impress me more than the multi-billion dollar franchise that inspired it.

It takes upon the foundations of Pokemon and evolves and improves it more than TPC has since the attack changes in gen 4. With the latest FREE update they have randomizers and Nuzlocke options built right into the game itself. No need for mods or hacking or emulation or just keeping up with weird rules on your own. This is something the Pokemon devs could easily do if they could even be bothered. But no, with Pokemon we can't even get them to give us basic difficulty options. Indy devs do what Nintendon't. Get this.

Made it to the end

I enjoyed this game, it more skill based than other Monster training games I've played. I also enjoyed the platformer challenges. The more challenging platformer bits are optional for treasure. Very well made game. I'm too weak to battle people online, and I didn't take the time to 100% complete the game. I was excited to see a "New Game Plus" option after completion. I might come back to it again later but for now I have fond memories.

Really good game that most people sleep on

This game is honestly surprising. They nailed the Pokemon aspect and frankly the Metroidvania side of things is pretty good to but a bit bland. I would highly recommend this to monster collecting fans, but not necessarily to fans of Metroidvania style games as they would likely be very bored with this game. All in all I think they have a good first game here and hope they continue into a sequel and can double down on everything that made this one so good. Great music and art work on display here.
