About Mortal Shell

About this game

Developed by Cold Symmetry and published by Playstack.

Mortal Shells is a challenging, deep-action RPG that will test your sanity and resilience in a shattered world. Hone your skills, embody defeated warriors, and master the combat.

Darkness

In Mortal Shell, you'll explore a darkened, insane world where all you see in its horizon are littered bodies. With its gorgeous graphics and smooth play style, it'll be easy to get lost in it!

Embody the Fallen

Perhaps one of the most exciting aspects of Mortal Shells — aside from its challenging, soul-like playstyle and graphics — is the ability to inhabit fallen warriors. Occupy these Mortal Shells and gain their fighting styles: experience a new type of exploration.

Up To The Challenge?

Mortal Shell prides itself in being a difficult, soul-like game. Dodge, parry, and roll your way through every gritting battle — prove to yourself that, once again, nothing can stand in your way.

Steam Deck

Mortal Shell is verified on the Steam Deck, meaning you can take the adventure with you everywhere you go!

Critic Reviews

70 / 100
"My grievances with Mortal Shell aren't tied to the game's difficulty. That's a feature, not a bug. We're meant to gnash our teeth, to wail in misery at the washed out skies....
70 / 100
"Mortal Shell is an excellent entry in the Souls-like space with some fantastic ideas around character progression and combat, but is unfortunately let down by a health system...
85 / 100
"Mortal Shell shines brightly as an example of the Souls formula done well. Anyone who is a fan of the challenging gameplay the genre is known for will be happy with this title."

I just bought this game three hours ago and I haven't even started it yet, It would make sense if they gave me a few days to actually launch the game before they asked for a review, OK, i TRIED TO PLAY, PRETTY MUCH YOU WALK AROUND IN A FOG AND A GUY BEATS THE SH*T OUT OF YOU

It's amazing, my first soulslike and it's really worth it. Cool mechanics, and parrying is great.

Mini Dark Souls hits the sweet RPG spot

Staff Review
If you like Dark Souls, chances are you'll enjoy Mortal Shell. This slightly more condensed Indie world in which you battle many a foe will ignite the embers of your hardcore RPG heart, testing your skills against agile and brutal beasts. You'll possess fallen warriors and take on their stature and skills, finding the right 'Shell' for your playstyle for durability, stamina and resolve. It might not be as big as the AAA Dark Souls entries, but you'll still get the 'learn-evolve-succeed' type gameplay that many love, and a few loathe...

I am always on the lookout for SoulsBorne games, I don't care the setting or environment. I like the challenge. Or the punishment. I'm not sure. This game has a really bizarre and fascinating world and the game mechanics are somewhat unique. And, like any good Souls game, you have no idea what the story is.

If you prefer Darks Souls-esque games, this is for you. I didn't realize it was until the tutorial started. Definitely not my cup of tea.

Mortal shell is like dark souls, in that it is highly difficult. There's far less to it, and far less choice to work with. There's a few "shells" which are basically just characters, and weapons. You upgrade shells toward whatever they're best at (tank, speed, all-rounder, etc). Good concept. Unfortunately, the game suffered in that many aspects seemed unpolished, despite being a fairly small game. The shells didn't feel like they had any benefit besides one having a lot of health. The controls were non-responsive, and the game frequently didn't load in enemies until after they began attacking. Major areas were also completely covered in fog that makes seeing enemies and reacting to them nearly impossible. Overall, there just isn't enough in the game to make it feel like it's worth suffering through.
