About Nephise: Ascension

About this game

“Nephise was a young orb collector. One day, while searching for orbs, she got lost and fell down a hole into Dragons Valley. The only exit was via the High Grounds, but there was no easy way up there. She came upon a vast lake. She unmoored a boat near to the shore, and sailed it to the other side…”

This is the 3rd instalment of Mr. Bodur's Nephise series and also the most ambitious one. While completing a walkthrough can still be done in a couple of hours this episode is much longer than its predecessors. As you can expect the game looks spectacular thanks to the latest iteration of the Unreal engine. Outdoor sequences cover all seasons (I particularly liked the snow-covered forest) and the zombie- and skeleton-infested dungeons represent a new addition to the already varied locales. Nephise is still a walking simulator (our heroine's favourite pastime is still collecting orbs), however, this latest episode includes some platforming sequences (well-timed jumps are mandatory!) and the already mentioned underground sections have enemies we need to avoid. Perhaps the next episode will have some melee weapons so that Nephise can fight back... who knows? We also have the opportunity to see Nephise from the outside thanks to the several cutscenes included before the chapters. As usual, voice acting and soundtrack are both top notch. It is also nice to have English subtitles from a non-native English speaker that was proofread and has a good use of vocabulary. Ascension is highly recommended for both walking sims and fans of the Nephise series.
