Okami is one of those games that has has about five different cult followings, cultivated individually over time. It's a game you're naturally inclined to be a bit too lenient to. A game about a Japanese god bringing light to the world and solving the problems that plague the era, all communicated through some interesting Zelda-esque gameplay, constant oddball turns, and a dog doing dog things as a protagonist. Cherry on top, this is a pretty fantastic port of the game that conserves everything that it did well and plays perfectly on PC. Trouble is, and there's no nice way to put this, I am not a 7-12 year old who played this when it first released on PS2 15 years ago. While every other aspect is interesting, accessible, memorable, and sticks with you, the actual gameplay and pacing of Okami is designed for a 7-12 year old playing this in 2006. If you have a reading level above 5th grade, you're going to be very bored with this game's constant, slow, boring dialogue sections. If you have the attention span of someone who does not live in 2006 and has more things to do than none, you're going to be bored by the wide, empty maps you have to continually trudge along to do any side content. If you have the standards of someone who isn't a very young teen and only gets one game this year, then you're going to be bored by the repetitive combat, the threadbare quests, the monotonous progression, the linear dungeons, pretty much everything. Okami is a tough sell these days. The two reactions you're going to see are "This is amazing, because I played it when I was 7-12 in 2006" or "I am beyond bored, I tried, I got some headways and I just had to stop, I'm sorry". I 100%'d Okami. It took about 45 hours, so probably 25-30 hours for a casual playthrough, and it felt like 120. It's not the first time I've played Okami, either, the first time I got pretty far and I had to stop because I was bored out of my mind back when the Wii HD release dropped. But it stuck with me, and I gave it another go, finished it. Okami has a lot of good ideas, goes to weird places, and ends with a bang, but the execution and pacing is probably going to lose you if you don't have severe nostalgia to keep you running. Still, if you've got the tolerance, the adjusted standards, and maybe some podcasts to play in the background while you're grinding out the side stuff - in short bursts - then this is an experience of a game that's probably going to stick with you in a way that no...

There is no way that I can describe Okami other than "beautiful". The visual style is not like any other game I've ever played and the story and gameplay are solid. Yeah, there are some clunky parts like the camera and lengthy textboxes but it holds up today just as well as when it first came out way back when. I'd recommend using a gamepad as keyboard controls seem awkward to me.

I forgot how beautiful this game is, and how fun it is to cover people in ink. My only dislikes are that the gibberish voices playing over the dialogue can be annoying if you're not in the mood for it, and the dialogue itself is a bit slow. At least you can normally speed the dialogue up just by pressing a button/key or two. Honestly, I dread the kimono drawing mini-game and the last Blockhead more than anything. Other than those few quibbles, I fully recommend Okami, especially if you missed it during the original release.
