An upgrade from the first game. Mechanically it's more fun and more in depth (dual classes and subclasses) and narratively the story and the different factions hold up well when compared to its predecessor. There's an entire section dedicated to ships (traveling through the map, upgrades, crewmates, leveling up, a ship to ship text based combat and boarding combat, as well as random events that trigger *very* infrequently); and a more relaxed injuries and resting system. The dialogue acknowledges a players class, origin and race significantly more than the previous one ever could and there's also a relationship system that is fun to play with but is ultimately a little shallow. There are some romances that are a nice touch considering obsidian's relationship with romances as a whole but they're still extremely short compared to any other rpg that includes them (Dragon Age, Pathfinder Kingmaker...etc.). The game shifts the focus so that you can use your watcher powers more as well as communicating with the gods more frequently which are arguably some of the best parts of the first game. The ship to ship combat isn’t worth engaging with as boarding enemy ships is quicker and doesn’t result in hull damage, dying crew or injuries. The morally gray writing is still excellent and it really makes you way out your pros and cons when siding with factions but at the same time it leads to disappointing endings as no matter what you do you’ll never get a happy ending without sacrificing something or someone else. Despite its upgrades I can't shake the feeling that I get bored of it quickly and need frequent breaks from it.
