About Remothered: Tormented Fathers

About this game

Remothered: Tormented Fathers is the pure and realistic survival horror. A game by Remothered S.r.l., directed by Chris Darril, developed by Stormind Games.

The story is rich of unpredictable plot twists, but it is touching at the same time. Psychology plays a huge role within the game: heroes and enemies are atypical and the line between good and evil is blurred. The development of the game is similar to that of a film narration, where the player perfectly identifies himself with the character. The soundtrack, composed by Nobuko Toda (Final Fantasy, Halo, Metal Gear Solid) and Luca Balboni, enhances the terrifying atmosphere of the game.

NIGHTMARISH WORLD

Rosemary Reed, a fascinating 35-year-old woman, reaches Richard Felton’s house, in order to investigate on the disappearance of a girl called Celeste. The woman is greeted by Gloria, the nurse who takes care of the old man, who is affected by a mysterious disease. When Richard understands Rosemary’s true intentions, the dread begins.

KEY FEATURES

Remothered: Tormented Fathers is the first title of the long-awaited 3rd person game trilogy. A web of lies where murders and obsessions come to life. A revolutionary experience created for survival horror fans.

  • Many ways to survive - The endless combinations of game dynamics make the experience available to every gamer: stealth, action, strategic, hide&run. Deceive your stalker and block him in another area of the house. Attack your enemy and make your items more powerful. Carefully study the behaviour of your stalker and his path. Don’t get too close to your enemy, act like an unperceivable shadow, hiding yourself from his sight. Or just mix these dynamics together.
  • Psychological plot - Characters in the story are everyday people that turn themselves into scary monsters.
  • Movie-like cutscenes - Thanks to his impressive direction, Chris Darril puts into play a story rich of complex life-like characters.
  • Audio clues - Use the soundtrack and the 3D audio sound effects to understand when your stalkers are getting closer.
  • No health bars - Your body is the only way to understand how you are doing.
  • Realistic puzzles - Environments and characters have been conceived to be realistic and credible.
  • Top-notch soundtrack - Nobuko Toda (Final Fantasy, Halo, Metal Gear Solid) and Luca Balboni wrote the music for the game.
  • Real-time loading - Explore the mansion without worrying about empty moments or boring loading times.

Remothered has a somewhat bad reputation as a series, largely due to the critical flop of the second game, Broken Porcelain. This game was relatively well received at first, but players quickly found themselves annoyed or even bored by the gameplay, which is both a fair judgment and a misleading one. In the beginning of the game, you're introduced to the three primary characters; Rosemary Reed, our protagonist, suspects something shady is going on involving the Feltons. In an effort to discover more, she pretends to be a doctor following up on Dr Richard Felton, who recently left a care facility for undisclosed reasons. While questioning him, she almost immediately outs herself as a liar by asking questions about the Feltons' missing daughter, Celeste, and this is then confirmed when the nurse, Gloria, announces that the hospital has never heard of 'Doctor Reed'. After being thrown out of the house, Rosemary sneaks her way back in by stealing Gloria's keys to the front gate, and then the gameplay really begins. At least, that's where you're actually free to roam the mansion. While initially you aren't allowed to run, it's actually a bad idea to do so for the majority of the game due to the stalker mechanics. Running will alert them to where you are, forcing you to crouch-walk through 90% of the game just to avoid them. And this is how you explore the mansion - tip-toeing around looking in all the rooms for key items you need to progress the story, occasionally finding pictures or articles that further explain the story. You'll be going up and down the same staircase repeatedly as you complete a list of objectives in order to escape the mansion, during which you'll eventually discover the truth about not only Celeste, but the Feltons and even the nurse, Gloria. The story is really the strong point of the game. Tedious gameplay aside, Remothered tells a deep and harrowing story of abuse, trauma, and revenge that will leave you wondering who the real villains are.

Remothered: Tormented Fathers is a throwback to survival horror in all its glory, reminiscent of classic Alone in the Dark with a more modern and contemporary twist. It's also gruesomely gory in a few scenes, so be aware of that. It did remind me more of Alien Isolation in terms of its mechanics, but it's rather more scripted than that and in third person, maybe a slight bit of The Evil Within. It doesn't mean you won't be on edge every single second of the game, including during the beautifully rendered cutscenes. The atmosphere is very helpful in instilling a sense of dread, albeit not as dreary as the Resident Evil games, but a very dense "darkness" pervading through the labyrinthian house. The characters, well, they might not be unique or memorable, but I'll be damned if the voice actors didn't give their whole best performances. If there's one negative I'd give this game is the illogical puzzle design, some of which require backtracking and even trial and error, Otherwise, a good entertainment value that's worth a try.

The graphics are good, the only thing I didn't like was that the main character moved (Walked) really slow.
