About Returnal™

About this game

Introducing Returnal, the extraordinary hit PlayStation videogame now available on PC!

Escape Atropos

Harness the power of Returnal and dive into a high-stakes sci-fi world like no other. Returnal puts you in the shoes of Selene, an astronaut stranded on the planet Atropos, an alien world filled with danger and discomfort around every corner. In a desperate race against time and the shifting layout of this ever-changing land, explore ancient ruins while piecing together a plot that could save your life — or take it away.

An Ever-Changing World

No two playthroughs are ever the same thanks to its procedurally generated environments and enemies – providing challenge and variety even after multiple replays. Every single run through Returnal is different from the last, emerging ever-changing landscapes for seasoned gamers ready for a challenge. Use powerful shape-shifting weapons to craft unstoppable strategies as you fight to outlive an environment that’s constantly evolving around you. Your actions have lasting consequences—blade shards from defeated foes become part of a metamorphic landscape filled with fast-paced close combat, tense weapon battles, and all sorts of devious threats waiting to surprise you at every turn. Returnal merges adventure with horror as Selene fights for her survival in this next-level action game. With stunning visuals inspired by H.R Giger’s iconic artwork, experience transformations both in the game’s eerie environment and in your own skillset as Rogue Elements adapt to the world around them while heightening each terrifying challenge they confront along their journey.

Exclusive PC Features

Looking better than ever with support for Ultrawide and Super Ultrawide monitors, you can expect to see some amazing ray-traced reflections and shadows. Returnal even has an FPS counter and a latency tracker to help you tailor the graphics to your needs. While cross-play with console players isn’t supported, you can still grab a PC friend or even a random player to help you out.

Returnal stars Selene, an astronaut stranded on the strange, cryptic planet of Atropos. It's an exploration of the planet, its ruins as well as concepts such as identity and memory — with some existential dread. As Selene traverses the ever-changing landscape, the past and present intertwine, creating a captivating narrative that made me want to keep on playing. The gameplay is fluid and responsive, combining third-person shooting with dynamic movement. Combat is fast-paced, adrenaline-pumping action. There are bullet patterns and other things that are normally found in 2D shoot-em-up, which is quite novel and works well. I played most of it in co-op, with a good friend, and there the game became even better. By blending compelling narrative, great aesthetics with stellar gameplay, co-op and roguelike elements it's a game I would highly recommend.

The game as a whole is very atmospheric with some well designed battles. Just fair warning it takes some time to get used to the systems. You have your basic jump, dash, and attack. You can reload weapons after using ammo by hitting R2 at the right timing. You get a few small abilities by killing enemies without dying. There are aliens you can attach to you that buff but debilitate you in different ways. There are “malfunctions” that you can get by getting items that are malignant. You can remove these malfunctions by succeeding in the tasks shown on screen or using items. However, there’s always a chance you might not get those malfunctions. Beyond that, the only tip I can give is you can dash through projectiles so use that to your advantage. I don’t want to spoil anymore, but I hope that helps. I got the game to try out the dual sense and I feel it definitely adds to the overall experience.

Amazing game with a few aggravating co-op bugs. The story and combat has me hooked. I'm a sucker for roguelikes and this game nailed it. Procedurally-generated map with every death. The amount of items and buffs that persist through death is just right. A friend and I had a lot of issues with co-op: de-sync, disconnecting, and laser not appearing but still dealing damage.
