RimWorld is a sci-fi colony sim driven by an intelligent AI storyteller. It generates stories by simulating psychology, ecology, gunplay, melee combat, climate, biomes, diplomacy, and more.
Survive
You begin with three survivors of a shipwreck on a distant world. Your colonists are not professional settlers – they're survivors from a crashed ship. They're uneducated, so don’t know how to build shelter, find food and water, or defend themselves from the many threats that they will face. But not everything goes smoothly. starvation, disease, mental breakdowns, pirate raids...It's designed to co-author tragic, twisted, and triumphant stories about imprisoned pirates, desperate survivors, lone gunmen, and bumbling soldiers. It works by controlling the "random" events that the world throws at you. Every thunderstorm, pirate raid, and travelling salesman is a card dealt into your story by the AI Storyteller. There are several storytellers to choose from. Randy Random does crazy stuff, Cassandra Classic ramps up the difficulty, and Phoebe Friendly is… well… friendly.

Build in the forest, desert, jungle, tundra, and more. Decorate your colonies to make them feel like home. Watch your colonists develop relationships with one another. Source the resources you need to survive and thrive and expand your colony until it spans the globe.

Fantastic game. Have dabbled in simulators over the years (had Sim City 2000 as a kid and, despite being awful at it even with cheats, sank hours into it) and this is one of the most robust I've ever tried. Huge amount of depth and have barely scratched the surface in the 30 hours I've sunk in. Still very accessible despite the complexity. The story telling element is not to be underestimated; I lost a colonist early (a few hours) in my first real playthrough and almost quit, I'd already become attached to the character. Great game.

Fun colony simulator. Has a bit of a learning curve but don't hesitate to google what you need since there's a lot of relevant results. Mods add a lot of content, base vanilla game is a bit lacking without the DLCs. Sound design and soundtrack are lovely. Lacking steam achievements and trading cards albeit, would be nice to get those in a future update.

Unfortunately, this game is super overhyped. And the RimCult is quick to blast anyone not running along with their adoration narration. Factually, you have a mixture of Keplerth, The Sims and Honey I Joined A Cult with a dash of Dark Souls that takes forever to get off the ground. I don't mind a slow start game, but 9+ hours needed to even start getting off the ground is excessive. It can be a little fun, but it's nowhere near what it is claimed to be. Use the wrong AI storyteller and you basically fail the game. Don't know something obscure? Fail. There's better uses of my time imo.

I'm really enjoying playing this game. I tried a while back to get into Dwarf Fortress, and although I enjoyed the concept I found it very difficult to get into. Rimworld is far more accessible, and I'm really enjoying the interesting stories that are developing as I manage my colony.

It calls itself a story generator. That pretty much nails it like dwarf fortress did before. Stories happen and you get very invested in your colonists little lives. You have the time between assigning tasks and when the colonists complete them and relax between all the horror, watch their lives play out.
My first story in rimworld:
My first colony I started with 1 guy. Then a spaceship crash where the only survivor was 1 girl who fell in love with the guy after he nursed her back to health. Life continues, they get married and then a message pops up about how the girls mother is in trouble and wants to shelter in your colony while being pursued. I let her in knowing we will have to fight. The girls mother was a corrupt sheriff with the traits jealous and greedy, but fantastic combat stats. The one perusing her was a nerd with a club and no combat ability. Imagination says the nerds ran the corrupt sheriff out of town for harassing them. I draft the mother tell her to fight, i would like to take the nerd alive convince him to join our colony....bam mother kills him with 2 punches. A short while later because she hates the bruises and pain she came in with along with the fact i basically put a bed in the shed and called it her room she goes berserk and decides to kill my first guy. He misses with his revolver and she beats him unconscious and continues beating him, till his wife picks up his dropped gun and then with one shot to the back of the head kills her mother.
Thats rimworld.
