About Ring of Pain

About this game

Delve into randomly generated ring dungeons where encounters come to you!

Observe and plan your route. Will you go for the loot or backstab a creeping horror? As you scavenge, fight and sneak to new encounters, the ring reacts to your actions.

Play as fast or slow as you like in this challenging, turn-based roguelike. Just be careful where you tread - You may find yourself ambushed, or worse...

See the outcome of your choices so you can focus on decisions.

Creatures broadcast their actions in a hostile environment, ready to erupt. Will you flee or find a way to use the dungeon against itself?

Positioning is key to survival. You can be quickly overwhelmed...

Observe the Ring and strategise.

Learn, adapt, or face demise.

Mimics offer you a choice for a price. Take what you can hold and build a combination of gear with passive powers.

Maybe you’ll be quick and evasive, with an acid soaked blade. Or maybe you’ll be a brute force juggernaut, or a fireborn damage sink with an affinity for explosions.

Buy your way to power or adapt with what you scavenge in these unforgiving depths.

Deep in the Ring of Pain you will discover new paths into the unknown. Places with new friends, powerful loot, and cryptic rhyming lore.

Find pleasant reprieve and howling terrors best left undisturbed.

The brave may be rewarded for their risk... or crushed by their ambition.

In darkness, careful where you tread.

What was unknown now fills with dread.

  • 16 Core path dungeons plus 2 branching endings to test your final build.

  • Cute frog friends.
  • Pain and suffering.

Shadows cast a truth to see,

In darkness you can visit me.

Ring of Pain is a linear survival card game with 16+ levels. We can either move left or right, sometimes teleport to a different position, pass cards, try to sneak past enemies or attack them. There are plenty of stat cards, healthy potions, random rewards, chests and various strong enemies. New levels have stronger enemies and ultimately lead into a boss battle. Each run is unique as we build our deck of cards, increase our stats and gain some special abilities. The game also offers daily challenges that have special rules. Cards look very distinctive, move positions in the ring, they can transform, explode or evolve. There is a symbol above them what action they will do next and below, there are stats. We will unlock new cards every time we discover them in the treasures or at the traders, there are also various exits. Similar to Slay the Spire. It is very subtle and mostly focuses on sound effects. It's possible to finish it from start to boss ending in an hour but as a newcomer there will be some unexplored parts and getting used to game mechanics takes a while. Moreover, we need to play carefully, build up for the finale with the best possible card combinations. Difficulty Hard. Tricky. It is different from game to game, some can last almost till the end without struggle, some end up being too short because the placement of enemy cards makes it painful to stay in the level. It's an interesting spin to card games, giving players freedom of choice, forcing them to make well thought-out decisions when overwhelmed by strong opponents. I've only been half successful as I have unlocked the majority of items but only beat one of the bosses. It's got great replay value and despite not offering direct progression, it feels rewarding after a long run.

Amazing & Creepy Card-Based Dungeon Crawler

Ring of Pain is brilliant. It scratches a similar itch for me as Fidel Dungeon Rescue does, in the sense that it takes the familiar format of a dungeon crawler, but executes it in an original way. The result has a strategy-focused, puzzle-esque feel to it, all while retaining a very fast game pace that makes it excellent for quickly hopping into the game when you want to take a break. Combine this with one of the most unique visual aesthetics I've seen in indie games (and that says a lot, because creativity abounds endlessly in this scene) that's creepy and colorful at once, and you have an absolute banger of a game that's also continually being updated by the developers, for whom this clearly is a passion project with a lot of love put into it. I'll admit that the writing or lore is kinda passing me by. It feels cryptic to the point where I'm not sure I'd get it even if I looked up some elaborate explanation on a wiki or on YouTube. But! It's still interesting, because what little dialogue you'll find scattered about is written in an intriguing way. And hey, the main focus of the game are the mechanics. And as I've mentioned before, those are brilliant. Go buy Ring of Pain.
