About Rock of Ages

About this game

A rock-solid combination of rock-rolling action, deep strategy, and captivating art and music from different ages of history, this is a game of crush or be crushed! Two castles stand opposed; one is yours, the other is your enemy’s. They're a jerk and their castle sucks, so you’re going to try to smash it using an enormous boulder. Even as they build up their defenses, you're ready to roll over them in order to raze that unsightly tower. But beware! There’s a giant boulder headed your way, too.

Clunky controls and uninspired level design make the game very hard to recommend

I found the general aesthetics of the game pretty charming, and the Monty Python’s style sequences shown before the levels start are generally pretty funny. Sadly, the gameplay and level design are flawed to say the least and make the game very hard to recommend. Controlling the rock as it goes hurtling down a level, destroying everything standing in your way is not as satisfying as it should be. The rock feels clunky and at times unresponsive, in part because this levels don’t have a very good flow. Apart from controlling the rock, you spend some time setting up obstacles for the enemy’s rock to face. This part of the game can be pretty fun, especially when you find the perfect strategy to stop the enemy’s AI dead in its tracks. But it’s usually hard to see the effect of your strategy on the enemy, because when they are dealing with it, you are too busy controlling your clunky rock down a hill. Furthermore, the menus are pretty awful to navigate and the charming factor of the game wears off pretty soon.
