DELVE DEEP
Launched in 1987 on the Apple Macintosh, Shadowgate is the granddaddy of first-person, fantasy adventure games. Developed by Dave Marsh (founder of Zojoi) and Karl Roelofs, Shadowgate has been redesigned and/or ported it to over 15 platforms. While the beloved game has been critically well-received, it has never achieved the ultimate goal of its creators - actually being inside the fantasy world. That is, until now. Verified purchase
VR (WMR HP Reverb G2) version on the Shadowgate game, I have not played any original versions of the game so I cannot tell if there are any similarities to game play or story line. The controller bindings seem to work well without any editing through Steam, although the mapping in-game setup page did not show any information of the binding. There are in-game floating texts that attempt to tell you how the controllers work, and there is a tag along bird named Odin that is a companion that will give you hints along the way (when asked). Movement in the VR environment is snap turning that can be fine-tuned in setup, moving forward with either smooth continuous with left controller, or teleport with right controller. I forgot about teleport function which is required to make it through a certain puzzle. There are 4 difficult setting that can be changed on the fly during the game, I play on easy level. You are equipped with a wand/shield that you find early on the quest and have an inventory pack to open when you need to use objects you have gathered along the way. The puzzles consist of making way through a maze, finding objects laying around or in secret locations that you find with the help of Odin, dodging things shooting at you, and monsters that pop up to harass you (side note: monsters can be made to look more cartoonish so as not to scare you). You can die many times, but there are save points along the way that you can spawn back to. Also, you can reload a previous save point if you do not like to your progress. The story line is good enough for an adventure game, there are places to watch a recording of a Dwarf giving a report of some type.
Overall, very good adventure game, so much for me that I forget about the time I have been emersed in the headset.
