About Shenmue™ I & II

About this game

Relive Ryo Hazuki’s adventures in Shenmue I & II from Sega.

Engaging Mini-Games and Diversions

Experience the revitalisation of the much-sought-after Shenmue I & II, two action-adventure RPGs by Sega that defined modern gaming. The game offers an intriguing blend of jujitsu combat, investigative sleuthing, RPG elements, and captivating mini-games in an upgraded environment with enhanced graphics and a consistent frame rate.

Authentic Cultural Landscapes

The games are renowned for pioneering open-world city exploration and the Quick Time Event (QTE). Players can observe day-night cycles, weather changes, and NPCs engaging in their individual routines, making the gaming experience more realistic and immersive. These elements have ensured the game's place in the list of "greatest games of all time".

Riveting Journey of Revenge

The game's story revolves around teenage jujitsu artist, Ryo Hazuki, who embarks on a path of vengeance after witnessing the murder of his father. The story unfolds through 1980s Yokosuka, Japan in Shenmue I, and continues in Hong Kong, China in Shenmue II. Players can engage with martial arts masters who aid Ryo's quest and provide insights into his father's death. The remastered version offers fully scalable screen resolutions, an updated user interface, and a choice of modern or classic controls.

"A weird, beautiful, melancholy martial arts adventure. Flawed, but an unforgettable, singular experience."

"Shenmue is incredible- All open world games should be this good. Players hoping for a little more action and less Forklift Operating should check out the Yakuza series."

"To me, both Shenmue 1 and Shenmue 2 are the epitome of what Japan was able to accomplish when publishers gave the developers under them very long leashes to just go out there...

Favourite games growing up. Little has changed, just as good for escapism as they've ever been.

I didn't play the third game, but those 2 are as good as it gets. Clearly they show their age, and the games are quite clunky for modern standards, but if you played those in your youth, you will feel at home immediately. Graphics has been cleaned up, and sound is fine. These are the first example of "open world" games that inspired what you would then see later on down the road.

An interesting romp that is more charm than substance. The voice acting is abysmal, the character you play as (Ryo) controls like a truck, but it all has a charm to it that I felt was genuinely appealing. A lot of people will say you need to have some form of nostalgia to enjoy it today, but I hadn’t played the games beforehand and I enjoyed both of them throughly.

Really glad these games are still around so maybe they can find the audience they deserve. If you're looking for wall to wall action, you won't find it here. But, if you can just take your time and enjoy the world, there's a lot to like.

Shenmue I & II Review

Sam Jones
Staff Review
The Dreamcast versions of Shenmue I & II were a revelation for video games - and the remastered Steam PC versions look set to be just as enjoyable almost 20 years down the line. Enjoy a beautiful 3D open-world with a story of revenge, as well as mini games and plenty of side quests to keep you playing for hours. And, when you've enjoyed these two, you'll be all set for the arrival of Shenmue III.
