This game should not exist. It feels cobbled together yet cohesive. There are pop-ins but I don't mind. It's pure fun. The boss battles have been epic in scope, sound, and music. I actually look forward to them. The story is somber and hopeful. It's such a mixed bag of wonderous creativity. Give it a shot, you won't be disappointed.

The first 5 hours of Sonic Frontiers was probably the most fun I’ve had with a Sonic game. I honestly thought it blasted past my expectations and proved me wrong, I thought it was honestly an amazing step forward for the franchise. It isn’t. The first island may have been fun, but the game gets boring real fast. By the point you reach the 2nd or 3rd island the gameplay loop becomes very boring and more noticeably bad and lazy as all the loop summates to is going on short 5 second automated rollercoasters that are randomly scattered around a dull map with no rhyme or reason. Not even halfway through the game I found myself just rushing through the story to get this game off my backlog rather than exploring and getting every collectible that I found so exhilarating earlier on. Do I think that I did actually have fun in those 5 hours? Yes, I really do believe so but I say now that this game was REALLY dragged out. For a long time how short Sonic games were was a big issue, but now that the games are 20 hours long, it creates an even larger issue of repetition of a badly executed idea instead of leaving it dead in the ground when it should be. I do think that this is a good game, somewhat. Do I think you should get it? No. Get any other Sonic game, hell, even Sonic Forces. Sonic Forces may only be 3 hours long and hilariously bad but I would rather play a hilariously bad game than a boring one which is what Sonic Frontiers is at the end of the day.

This is an odd one. It's more of a proof of concept or tech demo than a fully fledged game. The open world is fairly empty and the actual, typical Sonic stages are few and incredibly brief. The music is lackluster, cutscenes amount to little more than stationary character models talking to each other (unless they're prer-endered. In which case they're presented in a low Res 30 FPS), and visually it would fit right in with early Xbox 360 games. Having said that... I can't stop playing it. It's actually really fun to just run around as Sonic in the environment they've created. I think there's a solid framework here for them to build on with a sequel and I'd be very excited to see THAT game. I decided to give this a recommend, but it's on the condition that you grab it on a discount and can approach it without any expectations.
