About Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones

About this game

In Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones, the player journeys from a doomed Arkham into the depths of the Abyss. Create your own character based on 1920's archetypes and carve a path through a broken and mysterious world.

Your desperate battle against forces beyond comprehension will haunt you until the end. Physical combat will be challenging, spellcasting will have dire consequences, and your sanity will be strained to the breaking point by unknown abominations. Sometimes the best solution will be to flee what lurks beyond the threshold.

Features:

  • A hand drawn 2D world reflecting Lovecraft's themes of cosmic horror and dread.
  • Enemies, environments and storylines inspired by Lovecraft’s iconic original works. Take part in quests inspired by your favorite stories and see them play out according to your own decisions and role-playing style.
  • Choose from 8 main character Archetypes, each with its own origin backstory and specialties.
  • A host of weird companions will accompany you on your ill-starred journey: the lonely, antediluvian 'Outsider', a fallen soldier of the Great War reanimated by Herbert West. Recruit these and other outlandish beings to your crew.
  • Your character's Sanity and mental state will influence dialogue options. Mental illness comes with advantages as well as hindrances. Sometimes it pays to be mad in a world gone mad!
  • Stygian's Belief System determines how your characters cope with the warped reality of the new Arkham, as well as the rate at which they regenerate lost Sanity. Belief Systems also offer unique dialogue options, expanding the breadth of role-playing possibilities.
  • A new kind of spell system which sometimes takes more than it gives. Being a master of the occult is not as simple as flinging colored missiles from your fingertips. The black magic of Stygian is potent but may cost you your mind, your health, and possibly even much more.
  • Strategic, turn-based combat from a 2D perspective, similar to the classic Heroes of Might and Magic games.
  • The struggle in Stygian is not to save the world, for that battle is lost already. Pursue your own goals in these end times: salvation, vendetta, or perhaps something darker.

Great RPG with lovecraftian atmosphere and design. The battles might be too slow for some people, but if you can look past that, they're tense and strategic.

Stygian: Reign of the Old Ones takes a relatively faithfull approach to the works of Lovecraft and the story has a surprising amount of interesting twists. The core gameplay is a decent classic role playing game and the visuals and audio are well made. But, the game clearly isn't done. The story has no real ending, it ends like the chapter of a book, not like the grandiose finale of an RPG. Also there are plenty of bugs and issues with the game, however none are game breaking, so you can overlook them at least for the most part. Overall this really feels like a game that needs a "Part 2" or a "Complete edition"

The best Lovecraftian game out there. Incorporates vast majority of the Mythos, including some obscure works. Combat and RPG system are robust, if a bit undercooked. Atmosphere of the world is fantastic. Main flaw — game was clearly intended to be longer, but devs ran out of money, so it ends abruptly, but still totally worth it for enjoyers of Lovecraft or RPG games.

Despite the mixed reviews on steam I really enjoyed this game. I completed it within around 19 hours and didn't find it buggy like others did but I might have just been lucky with my character creation. I did buy it to play on the upcoming steam deck (like others I have been on the pre order list for over 1 year). Don't yet have a steam deck so played it on a 2017 iMac using a steam controller with no issues. I played as an explorer character with high survival and stealth skills. This character starts with a loyal dog called Winston who has good melee skills and other characters can be added in the playthrough. Unfortunately if you swap one out you can't find the previous character maybe this was a bug but could be intentional as in the loading screen says if you leave someone alone might not be there when you go back. The atmosphere and artwork of the game are great, sound wise some areas very creepy. I did find that it ended abruptly as if there is more story to be told. Despite that I will be replaying it at some point as an occult or science character as it will open up alternative pathways in the quests. I feel Stygian had a rushed ending but did enjoy it.

This game had great potential but sadly didn't execute very well. Mayn quests feel pointless, then ending is very aprupt and unexpected. The whole thing feels unifinished. There are some cool and satisfying moments but they are not worth the disappointment...

A lots to read, and fun roleplay opportunities. However, there's much QoL needed to make this game a smooth experience.
