About The Hong Kong Massacre

About this game

Blast your way through the streets of Hong Kong in a fast-paced, top-down shooter.

Inspired by classic action movies, The Hong Kong Massacre places you at the center of a hard-boiled revenge story, filled with brutal, cinematic shootouts and vivid underworld locations.

Take on the role of a former police detective bent on exacting vengeance for his partner's murder and use of a mixture of raw firepower, slow-motion and dive/dodge mechanics to tear your way through the criminal ranks.

Dive through windows or dodge behind cover - every shot is lethal, so stay aware of your surroundings and exploit the environment however you can.

When the heat is on, you can slow down time and plan for the next move. Avoiding bullets whilst taking out enemies is crucial for survival - but beware, your slow-motion ability is limited: plan fast, think ahead and bring down the bad guys unscathed.

Each level features a range of challenges, allowing you to to unlock new weapons as you progress, trading bullets from restaurants to rooftops across a moody, crime-riddled city.

"Hong Kong Massacre" is the light shoot 'em up game taking heavy inspiration from John Woo movies of 80s and 90s. It's fast paced, top-down view, similar in style to Hotline Miami but more inspired by gritty, 90s action look of John Woo movies. It's easy to learn but bit difficult to master because both you and enemies take just a single hit to get killed. There are only four weapons in the game (handgun, shotgun, uzi and assault rifle), which you can upgrade, but you can also switch between them in game, so it's easy to cause lot of chaos with style. Negatives: if you play on PC with keyboard and mouse, you use the mouse to aim, so in chaotic shootouts it can sometimes be difficult to keep the track of where the crosshair is so there will be times when you shoot completely off site thinking you are pointing in right direction. However levels are small, so restarts are not big deal, and unless you "git gud" there will be lot of restarts per each level till you memorize where the enemies are.

Holly dam, this is a hard game to master but it is a lot of fun to play… Even on the easy difficulty levels, it takes some turns to be able to end each level, especially if not using slow motion (a must for starters). The mechanics of the game are very simply and it requires quick reaction time a tactical strategy thinking to be able to bet the game. The sound track is awesome, but after a couple of hours in the game it starts to become too repetitive. Furthermore, it’s a shame that there is no voice acting on the game, it would make it better. On the final levels, there are some bugs wherein your shots do not kill the enemy and often you are killed by invisible bullets… this is very frustrating, and it took me 98 attempts to overcome one of those levels (and not because of higher enemy difficulty, but due to bugs on the programing). I finished the game on medium (very hard) on 23h or so. It has some replay value, if you are aiming for all the achievements. Overall, a good purchase on sale, due to the minor bugs, I would give it a solid 7 out of 10.

I have very mixed feelings on this game. The movement is very clunky and slow. All of the levels are pretty much the same and started to blur together after a while; lots of grimy streets bathed in neon lights, which ultimately felt cheap and lifeless after seeing it a dozen times. The repetitive levels aren't helped by the dull story, redundant soundtrack (felt like 4 or 5 songs tops, all pretty uninteresting), enemies with very little variety, and five identical boss battles. They're literally just bullet sponges, and those levels are just ripoffs of that one fight from John Woo's Hard Boiled where two characters run down a hall with a wall between them and shoot at each other.

Even though I am terrible at twin stick shooters, this one is really fun. Looks great too.
