About Through the Woods

About this game

Norse horrors await!

Through the Woods is a third-person Norse horror adventure set in a forest on the western shores of Norway that tells the story of a mother and her missing son. Through reactive narration, the player experiences the mother’s re-telling of the events surrounding her son’s disappearance. Players follow the path of a terrified woman who has forced herself to enter this terrible place for the sole purpose of finding her son, in a setting heavily influenced by Norse mythology and Norwegian folk tales.

With Through the Woods, Antagonist has captured the feeling of the forest as they saw it as children, with all the fear and mystery that comes from roaming through it alone. This is coupled with a powerful story and high-quality sound design, which in the darkness of the forest becomes a core mechanic. Through the Woods is a profound experience that directly delivers the feelings of loneliness and loss in a terrifying place...

YOUR OFFICIAL THROUGH THE WOODS STEAM KEY GIVES YOU:

  • Uncover dark tales of the past and present through reactive narration
  • Creative use of light and darkness generates deceptive environments
  • A frightening journey accompanied by beautiful and grim sound design
  • Stunning environments and experience stories inspired by Norse mythology, Norwegian art and nature

Game was unplayable after a certain point. Game will continually crash around the same point with the audio still playing. Seems this bug is an issue a number of people have but not enough that there are plans to fix it. Gameplay; it's mostly just a walking sim. There are enemies that can kill the character; however avoiding them is incredibly simple. Just crouching down with the flashlight off means they will literally walk over the player. Flashlight is optional; as even in a pitch black cave the game is well lit enough to see everything. There are no puzzles, just objects to pick up. Acting/dialogue; it's very wooden and feels like the writer was trying to be deep but it feels forced. Most the dialogue is in past tense instead of the character reacting to the situation in the moment. It can be confusing when thay actually talk about the past. Voice acting is poor. Graphics; Very bland and basic. Possibly fine for something with a bit more to do than walk. Glitchy. Anything resembling a cut scene is incredibly lazy looking. It's not a visually interesting game.

Entertaining little game. Graphics are okay, the world looks quite pretty but the character models tend to look a bit cursed (even the ones who are not supposed to). The gameplay is okay but I honestly expected something a bit different. There is not too much of Norse mythology, a few characters and legends maybe, but nothing is really explained. The more interesting stuff has to be found. If this was a pure exploration and walking (maybe even puzzle) game this game would have been amazing but there are a few weird steath/chasing scenes that were no fun to play through, sadly. They don't overpower the rest of the gameplay but are a significant part that cannot be ignored.

I found it a bit slow going but that's probably because I was rushing to play so as to be able to review it. I had some initial problems with it crashing on load but, once I'd turned down the graphics settings it was fine. I had a word document open in the background to write this review and it ran better once I'd closed it. This is probably more to do with my setup than the game though. On getting into the game I found it a bit slow going. I wandered around a bit and eventually realised that my direction was guided. I went to an abandoned village and found a few clues. If I had more free time it's a game I'd definitely look into as the story line was engaging. I've put it on my to play later list and will play more in the near future.

The graphics are nice (except the character models), the sound as well. The idea is also quite cool and unique. I like the nordic theme and lore that is included but kinda wished for it to me more. There are a few items to find, a few letters here and there but you can miss a good part of it and be none the wiser playing through the levels. The major part of the game is fun, you walk through the forrest and look for your son. You find lore and items that kinds tell you the story of what is going on. The problem for me were the levels in which you had to stealth/ evade certain creatures that kill you if you are unsuccessful. Those were often buggy and based on luck (does the game register that I am shining my flashllight on this thing or not?), which often ended in frustration. The ending of the game was, for me at least, surprising and nothing I had seen coming but also nothing I found particularly logical. It felt me disappointed and deflated and was very unsatisfying for some reason. This game offers about 3 hours of game play, including getting lost and having to repeat the weird stealth levels.

The story telling was above average but not mediocre. The game mixes scary creatures based of Norse mythology, but you don't interact much with them beyond running past them. This was in the middle, it was not bad nor good. Would i recommend it? Yeah it was worth the few hours of entertainment. Mid that this game also has achievements and collectibles, if you are into that.

With 2 hours in, it's an interesting story, for those of you whom enjoy such games. Not the best one I've played, but I am enjoying it a lot.

Through the woods was an enjoyable experience. Short, sweet, and at time scary.

Through the woods you go, not too far before you find yourself in a foreign place. Somewhere that feels awfully familiar and leaves you feeling airy at the same time. The world through the woods is not a pleasure to be in, but it is worth the journey. You never know what you will find, but when you hear something you should probably run. Don't be too quick to charge through the experience though, once you've made it through, you may find it difficult to make you way back. If you are interested in a short walk into a Nordic legend you may want to travel through the woods. You should tread lightly and remember this is not your realm.
