Meh for me

It's meh for me but i think others would love it. I'm not really big on the whole high school super hero "genre". Others have said it's a lot like persona. I've never played persona so i can't confirm.

I went back and forth on how I’d go about this review, because I have such mixed feelings. In the end, I went with a positive review mainly because the ending of the game is really interesting and done significantly better than the bulk of the game (for some reason). The story is about some unclear sh*t happening in Tokyo ten years prior to the game, then a dimension named Eclipse begins invading the real world, which leads into the protagonist Kou happening upon his classmate Asuka fighting monsters coming from it. Like any typical protagonist, he gets caught up in a whirlwind of crazy events and seems destined to be a part of the solution. Only certain people can see the gates of Eclipse, such as the protagonist and all his future party members who just happen to go to the same school as him. Those who manifest the power to fight the monsters within Eclipse are known as Wielders. It’s a game trying to be Persona, but doesn’t really live up to that title at all. I’m fine with games getting inspired by the Persona series, but they have to put in the work of actually making a good game. They can’t just throw in a bunch of parallels and hope that the audience is tricked into thinking it’s just as good. Although, looking at some reviews, it did work on some people. Yes, there are a lot of similarities, but I was far less entertained by this game than any of the Persona games. Information • Elaborate action RPG with several different attack options. • Technically party-based, but for the majority of the time, the player is using one character in battles. Summoning an additional party member into battle is an action the player can take, and it only lasts a short amount of time. • The menu pauses the battle and items are used instantly. For example, if your character has 1 HP left and you use a healing item from the menu, your character will survive, because there is no delay or character animation that needs to take place for the item to be used. • Dungeons are “mazes” of reasonable length and easy to get through. • Some platforming is required. Precision in jumping is occasionally mandatory to get to the end of a dungeon. • A balance of story and dungeon battles. Each chapter allows the player to talk to NPCs, shop, upgrade weapons, play mini-games, and increase bonds with special characters during “free time.” At the end of each chapter, there is a main dungeon to get through. • Optional dungeons are available and every dungeon is replayable, if the...

This game really should have been a twenty hour game instead of a 40+ hour one. The game's great at first; combat is fast and fun, the game is challenging but fair, and fun new characters are frequently added. It even ran well despite my potato of a laptop. But as the game goes on, things really start to drag. The abilities you get scale really fast compared to the strength of the enemies. Eventually this lead to much of the combat becomes "press special attack and wait for a bit". It doesn't help that this game recycles vanilla enemies even more than Persona 4: at one point you fight the same miniboss 9 times in one level. As to the story, it may very well set a record for hitting every single anime trope in the book. I still found it entertaining, but this was often via simply laughing at how bad it was or how idiotic the characters were acting. Still, I can't give a game that I paid $6 for and had a blast with for twenty hours a bad review. If you're the type of person who has to complete every game they get, avoid this game at all costs. Otherwise, consider giving it a whirl once it goes on sale, but don't be afraid to out it down halfway through if you aren't having fun.

TL:DR - better RPG games out there but worth it if you're looking your next RPG fix.

If you like an action RPG, this is a game that should be a good fit. Takes elements from other games, it's by no means perfect but you know what you're getting with this offering. If you're not into the genre, there are other better games to try first but I would recommend if you're looking for something a bit different.
