About Wickland

About this game

Wickland is an indie arena shooter heavily inspired by classic FPS games of the 90's. Morph into eight deadly beasts and use their own unique abilities, blaze through maps at insane speed to pick up power-ups, and fight your friends or foes in classic maze-like arena maps, just like the good old days. Wickland is an arena FPS dedicated to PC Gamers.

Main Objective

  • Wickland revolves around the unique arena FPS mechanic of morphing, fighting, and killing your opponent's beasts until their human character is defeated
  • Each beast you pick up has it's own armor which stacks onto your base health. In duel mode, beasts can only be picked up by 1 player at a time. Use map knowledge and strategic routing to take control of the beasts and win the match

Not worth it. Multiplayer is years dead. There's a limited number of maps and half of those maps are pretty bad, poorly designed. The weapons are interesting, however, and the way life and armor are handled is unique. Nonetheless, the movement is monotone and boring and the AI is rather mediocre. So it's not worth it for multiplayer or singleplayer. Skip it and forget about it. Sorry.

If you wanna fart around with bots for a bit, it's kind of fun. The concept is that each attack is not just a weapon, you actually become a different monster. Oh dear... It's a cool idea, changing your whole persona instead of just switching weapons.... but in practice it is problematic. If you are chasing around a character and they change into another one, well, it is an awkward mechanic when you have several characters running around who all keep changing. Which one was I shooting at? I guess this could be seen as interesting or challenging, but I found it simply confusing and frustrating, which is a bit of a shame. The base movement and feel is very similar to Quake, which is awesome. The characters look really cool. I think this would be better as a champion type shooter, where every character has a special move or ability but access to the same arsenal. And they either don't switch, or thats a power up. Most of the weapons / personas are fine but a couple are unintuitive or meh. Basically there are only eight pretty good maps. You have to manually add bots in practice matches, instead of there being a proper bot selection screen. There was no ui for changing bot skill. The animations and effects are mediocre. The sound effects for the monsters are pretty campy, which does add some comedy value. Everything looks ok, but it probably should look better in UE3. If you make a multiplayer only game, but ain't no players, then don't bother to make the practice matches fun and featurepacked, you have problems. I'm rating this thumbs up because it is so cheap and clearly some love went into this, but the game needed more testing and help.
