About Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty

About this game

From the depths of darkness, a dragon soars.

A new dark fantasy Three Kingdoms action RPG from Team NINJA, the developers of Nioh.

184 AD, Later Han Dynasty China. The land is overcome by chaos and destruction. The imperial dynasty that prospered for many years is now about to collapse.

Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty is a dramatic, action-packed story of a nameless militia soldier fighting for survival in a dark fantasy version of the Later Han Dynasty where demons plague the Three Kingdoms. Players fight off deadly creatures and enemy soldiers using swordplay based on the Chinese martial arts, attempting to overcome the odds by awakening the true power from within.

Wo Long refers to a crouching dragon, and also refers to a hero or person of greatness who is not yet known. This is the story of officers, who will later become heroes, during their ‘unknown’ period, and also the story of a protagonist’s rise from being a ‘nobody’.

Demons in the Kingdom

A dark fantasy set during the chaotic Three Kingdoms period, the narrative vividly tells the tale of a militia soldier’s strenuous fight for survival during a Later Han Dynasty infested with demons. It’s madness in the Three Kingdoms like never before!

Awaken the Power Within

Defeat deadly enemies to boost morale and awaken the power from within! Overcome adversity through unique new strategies, including battle styles based on the “Five Phases”.

Live by the Sword

Renowned for ruthless strikes that can change the tide of battle in an instant, sword practitioners of the Chinese martial arts gracefully change pace as they shift between offensive and defensive maneuvers. Overwhelm opponents with a flurry of force in a series of intense and bloody battles while learning the precision and skill necessary to become a true master of the sword.

Various Play Styles with Weapons and Wizardry Spells

  • Weapons

Choose from a wide variety of weapons, from glaives to dual swords, to discover which fits your fighting style.

  • Wizardry Spells

This secret art draws upon the power of the Five Phases, which allow for attacks using such elements as flames and ice. Upon achieving higher Morale Ranks, you can gain the ability to utilize even more powerful Wizardry Spells.

  • Divine Beasts

Divine Beasts like Zhuque and Baihu are brought forth through alliances with other warriors. By calling upon these Divine Beasts, you are able to perform feats of great power.

A fantastic combat system brought down by performance issues and weak enemy variety. Still great fun

This game, to me, has two big flaws. First is just the poor performance on PC. The game is playable for me, no doubt, but it's not graphically impressive or complex enough for me to want to accept the performance issues it does have. Especially the shader stutters during cutscenes, which usually made the audio desync. To make matters worse, the game ACTUALLY SLOWS DOWN if FPS drops below the target. So you start to notice some slowmo once it drops from 60 to 50fps, for example. All modern Team Ninja games do this and it's fucking stupid, because it means I had to cap to 30fps for some sections just to avoid the slowmo effect. It wasn't a deal-breaker, compared to the abysmal state of Stranger of Paradise's launch, but it's bad enough to keep me from going into NG+ and makes me not want to get the DLC. Though I still hope for an optimization patch in May, like what SoP got, considering that the official website says DLSS and XeSS support will be added in an update but that update is still not out. Second big gripe, the enemy variety. It's legitimately pathetic, like actually what the fuck were they doing??? I love how developers blatantly take inspiration from FROM SOFTWARE yet completely ignore one of the biggest strengths of their games: enemy variety. 70% of the enemies in this game are regular dudes with different weapons. You will fight like 7 different armies throughout the game and all of the soldiers fight the same way. Then there's the fact that you straight up see every enemy type in the game by the time you're done with... Part 2? Maybe even Part 1. THERE ARE 7 PARTS. I only remember two enemy types that were introduced past the midway point of the game. I ain't gonna exaggerate here: this game has about a dozen enemy types. It has more boss types than regular enemy types, sometimes making me wish the game was just a boss rush since they clearly didn't wanna bother making regular enemy types. The regular soldiers aren't particularly fun to fight either, and the enemies that ARE fun to fight obviously get old when you're fighting them for the 1000th time after 50 hours. The fact that the enemy variety is so undercooked made me get pissed when Team Ninja proudly announced they have a secret game that might also release in 2023. So they're developing that secret game, Wo Long DLCs, and Rise of the Ronin all at once. MOTHERFUCKER focus on one fucking thing at a time and finish it instead of spreading yourselves thin and putting out...
