About World War Z: Aftermath

About this game

Developed and published by Saber Interactive Inc.

Set within the world of Max Brooks, as detailed in his book of the same name, World War Z is a fast-paced, third-person shooter co-op zombie experience. With the release of the Aftermath expansion, you can now receive the whole thing as a neat package deal.

Travel the World

Follow the stories of various survivors; from the apocalyptic streets of New York, to a deserted research base in Jerusalem, or the once bustling streets of Tokyo suburbs, see how the zombie virus affected the entire planet in an expansive storymode spanning various continents and characters, each with their own story and goals.

Pick Your Poison

There are plenty of ways to go about clearing hordes of undead, and with eight playable classes to choose from, you’ll be sure to find one that takes your fancy. Each class in itself is customisable with a wide range of perks that affect both your activated abilities and your passive gameplay.

Undead Swarms

Battle your way through eight campaign levels, or try your luck at various challenge modes for unique rewards. If you just want to test your mettle, however, the endless horde mode will be more your style. Defend the airport against a relentless onslaught of undead, with the chance to win massive amounts of XP if you have the skill to survive long enough.

World War Z: Aftermath (WWZ:A) is a fantastic take on the zombie genre. While the game does have some downsides, and glitches, the game has some parts which are just executed phenomenally. The major selling point and the reason I have found this game so fun is the sheer number of zombies on screen, and the 'volume' of them that can rush you at a time. It is not hard to kill the zombies in this game, and they all go down with a single headshot (apart from some of the special ones). However, the game can still be difficult due to the literal waterfall of zombies during a horde rush. This 'Aftermath' edition gives you some extra starting weapon loadouts and skins, which you do not get in the default WWZ experience. You also get the opportunity to play in both first person mode, as well as the initially intended third person view. I personally prefer the third person view at the moment, as that is how the game was initially constructed, and as such the gameplay feels much more satisfying and smooth in third person. Although the first person experience is fun to add an extra challenge to this already challenging game! Some interesting mechanics are also implemented, for instance friendly-fire: Friendly-fire is always on, and cannot be toggled off without special modifiers. which makes spraying into the horde all the more fun when a teammate runs in. Overall, I've given the game 4 stars as it is a very good game, but still has a number of bugs, glitches, and overall clunkiness. However, these problems are slowly being worked on and patched out. Just several days ago (from when I wrote this review), the first-person mode recieved an update, which I am still yet to try. But it does show they are working on the issues and on improving the game. So definitely a recommend from me!

World War Z is a very competent successor to the Left 4 Dead Formula with some balances and additional features that helps it stand out from Back 4 Blood. The game offers different classes that can change your team dynamic / tactic / weapon of change / general playstyle. In addition to just finding better weapons on the maps, you can also use the credit you earn from finishing missions to upgrade them to better them in almost everyway, the same applies for classes as well. This means that those who played the games longer will have a numerical advantage over new players in addition to knowledge about the games. This is also a nice way of encouraging people to pick up different weapons to level them up. The game's mechanic is well-done for the most part but the offline AI is borderline useless and is often time a hinderance rather than a boon. They will stick to one spot during swarm sections and cannot use medkit, use heavy weapons, or interact with the map in anyway, they also struggle a lot with handling special infected. In short, play online at all time. Customization is there but it's mediocre for the most part, few character have skins that's actually worth going for and they're not really worth it as a whole. Also be aware that since this game has crossplay, you might have to wait a lot for console players to finish loading.

Staff Review
World War Z is a great game and really surprised me how good it actually was. I didn't have high expectations, but this really is one of the best squad based shooters since Left 4 Dead. There is something special about that moment when the first really big horde of Zombies attacks and you have utter disbelief over how many are coming towards you. This version has the original 4 levels each with 4 chapters and adds 2 new levels each with 3 chapters as well as including the extra Level from the original season pass so there is a fair bit to play. This version also adds a first person mode which makes it even closer than Left 4 Dead in look and feel. Must buy for any squad based shooter or zombie fans.

If you are disappointed the way Back 4 Blood end up being - this game is the one that might scratch your L4D itch if you tired of it at this point :D Graphics and mechanics are definitely better though not ideal.
