When I went into this, I did not expect the game that I got. It is a straight up boomer shooter with a very distinct style and some really cool ideas sprinkled into it. You are thrust into a story of visiting some family, either as a journalist (aggressive playstyle) or a priest (defensive playstyle) and find out that the city has been overrun. What follows, is a whole set of levels pulling you deeper into this weird world. The game leans heavily into the Cthulu mythos and always lets you in doubt about what you are experiencing. The art style and story telling keeps in all together as well.
The gameplay was actually surprising as these boomer shooters usually feel old in that regard, but the hit feedback was exceptional. You pop off the heads of zombies, shoot the tanks of scientists off and use it against themselves, turning them into a blob of mindless goo walking towards you. The boss fights are hard and expect some thinking and dodging from you.
The upgrade tree is great, since it gives you a lot of paths to go, that change your playstyle. Depending on your choice, you lock yourself out of another, which makes the replayability higher, just replay the game with the other character and choose the opposite upgrade. Since these points are also really limited, you may want to upgrade something else entirely as well. It all just feels rewarding.
I ended up playing the game twice and thoroughly enjoying my experience with this game. Just beware, that the developers are still ironing out some bugs right now, that may impact the experience a bit, but nothing too bad.
