About Overclocked: A History of Violence

About this game

Set against the backdrop of a catastrophic thunderstorm raging over New York City, Overclocked explores an archetypical, yet actual condition of mankind: violence. This psychological thriller mixes frightening fictional thriller elements using innovative narrative structures. Overclocked charts are the diffuse areas where memories and illusions; dreams and reality; perpetrators and victims; collide.

Army psychiatrist, David McNamara, is called to the Staten Island Forensic Hospital in New York City to consult on a case that requires his expertise in forensic psychiatry. Tasked with exploring the minds of five young men and women who were found scared, screaming, and without memory, he makes alarming discoveries as he begins to cautiously explore the psyches of his young patients. Throughout the game, players will switch between six different characters in this chilling interactive psycho-thriller.

Overclocked is an adventure released at the sunset of point-and-click adventures. Sure, there were and still there are games of this genre but nowhere near the numbers that were released during the '90s and early 2000s. Overclocked has a great story, a dark atmosphere (I mean, most of the story is set while a thunderstorm hits NY), switching between different characters (and watching the story from their point of view), but, somewhat, flawed mechanics. Despite that, this is a great game worth checking for any adventure fan or anyone who looks for a dark, mystery story.

Overclocked actually has a pretty interesting premise and starts off promising but falls a bit short with some of its design decisions. Puzzles, for example, are much too easy but at the same time, there's little guidance on what the game wants you to do or where to go or which characters to talk to. So you'll likely spend some time going around trying to figure out the right order of things to give you access to the items needed to solve a puzzle that you've probably figured out as soon as you laid eyes on it. The way you advance in the game is rather unique though and the main mechanic behind it has a lot of potential. It maybe doesn't work as well as it could've and does result in having to listen to bits of dialogue a few times over, but I still give it credit for trying and blending naturally with the game's story. The plot itself is interesting and managed to keep me engaged but resolves in a kind of unsatisfying way. The game's atmosphere is quite good though and I enjoyed the small routine that develops as you play the game and talk to the recurring characters awaiting you at "home" (an hotel) and "work"(a mental hospital). Overall, I feel 3 stars is a fair score for this flawed title that still managed to entertain me for around 8-9 hours and would recommend it for point n' click fans who've played most of the big titles and are looking for something that might've gone past their radar

Technically mediocre, with outstanding atmosphere!

Overclocked is a decent, although a bit clunky 3D point & click adventure game. It's plot is interesting, although the ending may feel a bit.... "dull". But otherwise its a great experience that is worthy of being played at least once! The atmosphere is exceptional and unique, I dont remember anything quite like it even outside the genre. It could be reminescent of some of the better psychological thriller films. All in all this is a memorable adventure game, despite its few flaws. I can only recommend it to fans of the genre!
